(1 Customer Review)
If there was ever a celebrity whose reputation as one of Hollywood's hippest cats was solid enough that they could risk ridicule by adopting a faux-Trinidadian accent for a novelty record, it was Robert Mitchum. The result is CALYPSO IS LIKE SOà, a collection of 12 Trinidadian tunes, some already made famous by Harry Belafonte, as well as some less well-known songs brought to the studio by Mitchum. Also included on the reissue of CALYPSO IS LIKE SOà are "The Ballad of Thunder Road," the theme from the Mitchum flick, and its B-side, "My Honey's Lovin' Arms."
Mitchum retains a dignified cool throughout the album, despite the kitsch subject matter of songs such as "Mama, Looka Boo-Boo," and "I Learn a Merengue, Mama." The album is equal parts Beat and Belafonte. In true Mitchum style, there is also a fair amount of risque material here, and this raunchy edge is perhaps what gives CALYPSO IS LIKE SOà its staying power.
Includes liner notes by Nick Tosches.Entertainment Weekly (11/3/95, p.66) - "...this long out-of-print 1957 gem is a must-have for any swinging bachelor or bachelorette." - Rating: A Melody Maker (8/19/95, p.32) - "...CALYPSO-IS LIKE SO may finish with two slabs of pretty standard film-star-turned-crooner fare...but mavericks like Mitchum were used to having inappropriately comforting endings tacked onto their best work. The genuine calypso stuff is startlingly good..." Robert Mitchum Calypso-Is Like So Songs | 1. | Jean and Dinah |

Calypso-Is Like So
$10.49 When Layne Staley died from a drug overdose in 2002, it had already been several years since most Alice in Chains fans stopped hoping for a new album. The singer had become a recluse since the late-`90s, and there was little indication that AIC would ever again produce much in the way of new music. As a result, when the remaining members reunited to release BLACK GIVES WAY TO BLUE in 2009, expectations were low. To the delight of all however, the album proved to be perhaps the Seattle combo's most energetic and consistent effort since its masterpiece DIRT. Perhaps the most surprising element of the new record was how much it sounded exactly like Alice in Chains. While new ...
| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Calypso-Is Like So
$15.65 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father's passions, only now, they've become his daughter's treasures, as well. It's an affirming story, but that's all it would be if Cash didn't sing her heart out here. The ...

Calypso-Is Like So
$23.20 R.E.M.'s five-night residency at Dublin's Olympia in the summer of 2007
"This is not a show," murmurs Michael Stipe at the start of LIVE AT THE OLYMPIA and it's not quite misdirection. R.E.M.'s five-night residency at Dublin's Olympia in the summer of 2007 functioned as working rehearsals for their fourteenth album ACCELERATE, with the band testing out each of the songs, exploring arrangements, finding breaking points, and pairing them with older songs that informed their back-to-basics move. As rehearsal, ...

Calypso-Is Like So
$10.39 ORCHESTRAL FAVORITES contains five symphonic works written by Frank Zappa, performed by Zappa himself and his mid-'70s rhythm section with a full orchestra. Recorded at the Royce Hall in Los Angeles in 1975, ORCHESTRAL FAVORITES is similar to Zappa's other symphonic works (parts of BURNT WEENY SANDWICH, 200 MOTELS, etc.). The album was not released until four years later however, due to a skirmish with Warner Bros. Zappa wanted to release a three-record set entitled LATHER, which was to include material from ORCHESTRAL FAVORITES plus the other late-'70s releases SLEEP DIRT and STUDIO TAN. But Warner Bros. forced him to release the complete work as separate albums (LATHER did finally appear as a three- disc set in 1996).

| | Best Of Tom Paxton: I Can't Help But Wonder Where I'm Bound CD (1999)
Calypso-Is Like So
$8.39 Principally recorded from 1964 to 1970 at Masterstone Studios & A&R Studios, New York, New York and live at The Bitter End, New York, New York in June 1970. Includes liner notes by Scott Alarik.
A 26-track compilation titled after one of Tom Paxton's most beloved songs, I CAN'T HELP BUT WONDER WHERE I'M BOUND is a well-balanced overview of the singer-songwriter's 1964-'71 tenure at Elektra Records. Paxton is sometimes overlooked among the top tier of the Greenwich Village folkies, because of the range and variety of his material. Unlike the sometimes-strident Phil Ochs, Paxton mixed his serious, topical compositions with witty, Tom Lehrer-like satires, including "What Did You Learn in School Today?" and "Forest Lawn." He also wrote disarmingly tender love songs, including "The Last Thing on My Mind" and the title track. Naturally, this collection also features two of Paxton's most durable songs, "Bottle of Wine" and the Woody Guthrie-like children's classic "Goin' to the Zoo," along with other tracks from all of Paxton's Elektra albums, many of which have never been available on CD.
Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch (Digiprep).
Compilation producer: Patrick Milligan.
