After toiling with classical references in his music for most of his career, guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen finally dedicated himself to writing a concerto for electric guitar. The combination is not unique, as several rock groups, including Metallica, have been backed by full orchestras, but this is the first work of its kind to feature the electric guitar as the lead instrument in a concerto. One of Malmsteen's biggest target's for criticism has been his inability to move beyond his speed demon reputation that he acquired after bursting on the scene in the early '80s. Seemingly stuck in arrested musical development this work proves that at least he's trying. There are many intriguing moments here and plenty of pyrotechnics, however, as a collective body of work, there is a lack of cohesiveness between his sometimes monotonous riffing and the orchestra. Despite the unevenness (unfortunately a Malmsteen trademark), this ranks as one of his best recordings. Recommended more for guitar fans than the classical connoisseurs, although the later may find the combination intriguing and perhaps even refreshing. ~ Robert Taylor

| Concerto Suite For Electric Guitar And Orchestra In E Flat Minor Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Beethoven meets the 21st century I wasn't sure about this cd at first, but the more I listened the more I got into it.I have always loved classical music, espicially Beethoven.I mean what kind of musicians from today will be remembered 200 years from now?Not many.I'm not saying that Yngwie is in the same catagory os the great composers of the past.I'm saying he appriciates the importants of classical music in todays heavy metal.I am glad that He's exposing classical music to someone who's maybe never listened to it.He did a great job composing these songs with a perfect balance of guitar and orchestra.Bravo,I hopes he does another cd like this one. Surprise, surprise You may already note that this is quite a surprise. I reluctantly purchased it because I'm a guitar nut. I used to dig Malmsteen's early works, but then he seemed to become to much of a egomaniac writing the same crap over and over... music with no creativity, no originality with the same shred licks. All the while the production quality suffering more and more as his controlling manner increased.
And, so I stopped buying his music. It was a sad story. Perhaps the greatest technical rock guitarist of all time unable to create decent music. It has been such a waste... And then Yngwie comes through with this. I bought it on a whim... call it a last chance or simply curiousity. Surprise, surprise. Here's the talent after all. The song writing is impressive and classically charged. It blends beautifully with his playing style. Of course, it makes you wonder, if he's able to write and create music at this level why was he wasting it on his regurgitated metal sound for all of these years.
The sound quality isn't the greatest. Sometimes his sound is a bit too shrill. But the music is good and his playing is masterful. His best since Alcatrazz... Heck, probably his best ever. My advise to Yngwie... do it again and again. And if you must create more metal, then surround yourself with the finest musicians and let them contribute to the song structures, the writing, the improvisation. It can only get better.
