(1 Customer Review)
On tracks such as the medley "Cobbler's Jig/Maltese Brawls," Renbourn shows off his dazzling fingerpicking style and breathtaking soloing. But Renbourn is never just about empty virtuosity. His playing invariably serves only the needs of the ... Full Descriptionsong. SHIP OF FOOLS is a must-own for Renbourn fans.
SHIP OF FOOLS harks back to earlier John Renbourn solo efforts like the classic SIR JOHN A LOT or THE LADY AND THE UNICORN. The one important addition is vocalist Maggie Boyle, whose ethereal voice recalls the late Sandy Denny but is very much its own instrument. Boyle sings on many of these songs, and her dreamy tones beautifully match the sonorities of Renbourn's six and 12-string acoustic guitars (often overdubbed, as on the driving title track).
Personnel includes: John Renbourn (vocals, guitar, cittern); Steve Tilston (vocals, guitar, mandolin); Tony Roberts (flute, pipes, clarinet, saxophone, background vocals); Maggie Boyle (whistle, bodhran, background vocals); Mitch Greenhill (percussion).

Ship Of Fools album
$13.65 Enya created a style whose wide open soundscapes were reminiscent of New Age, but more melodic, heavily based on the traditional Celtic music that formed much of her early singing career. This synthesis of styles proved marketable: the single "Orinoco Flow (Sail Away) was a global smash, underscoring the universality of her work. Its dramatic string arrangements and heavenly choir struck a chord which resounded across all cultural and musical boundaries. More hits followed: "Caribbean Blue" assimilated yet another cultural paradigm into Enya's style, bringing the exuberance of the tropics into her ever-broadening scope, while "Boadicea" found another audience--a success on its own, it was later turned into the hit "Ready Or Not" by the Fugees. PAINT THE SKY marks a fitting tribute to a truly global talent.

$14.69 Ronan Hardiman's music to Michael Flatley's extravagant stage production picks up directly where the show's precursor, the equally extravagant "Riverdance," left off. The sources for Hardiman's score are ancient Irish folk melodies, fervorous, polyrhythmic percussion and modern new-age ...

| | Boys Of The Lough To Welcome Paddy Home CD (1985)
Ship Of Fools music CDs
$14.45 The opening medley on TO WELCOME PADDY HOME, an amalgam of four highland jigs and reels, heads off this collection in the manner Boys of the Lough fans have come to expect. Celtic folk music, played with verve and a deep respect for tradition, has been the keep of this ensemble (who, in this incarnation, hail from Ireland, Northumberland, and Shetland) since the early '70s.
TO WELCOME expands the sound of those early albums by adding Uillean pipes, harmonica, and concertina to their usual instrumentation of fiddle, mandolin, guitar, flutes, and whistles. Plaintive airs, like the title track and "Miss Rowan Davies," alternate with waltzes, marches, hornpipes, and a host of speedy, looping reels, such as the medley "The Antrim Rose/Miss McGuinness/Brereton's." Irish guitarist and pianist John Coakley replaced late band member Tich Richardson here, and the band sounds as cohesive and polished as ever. Strong material, ...
| | Ella Fitzgerald All That Jazz CD (1989)
Ship Of Fools songs
$9.45 A collection of classic big-band-era performances by possibly the greatest jazz singer of all time, ALL THAT JAZZ is both an excellent introduction to the glory that is Ella Fitzgerald and an archetypal album of vocal jazz.
Fitzgerald's trademark scatting is in full force on these 12 tracks, which are mostly live recordings. Many of the songs feature extended scat solos from Fitzgerald, as well as instrumental turns from alto Benny Carter, trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, and others. The songs range from standards like "Dream a Little Dream of Me" and "That Ol' Devil Called Love" to lesser-known gems like the delirious "The Jersey Bounce" and ...

| | Martin Carthy CD (1965) (Import) United Kingdom
Ship Of Fools CD music
$17.19 Martin Carthy's 1964 debut isn't quite the self-assured masterpiece that slightly older British folk guitarists were knocking out around then--think of Bert Jansch, John Renbourn and Davy Graham--but it shows exactly why Carthy went on to become, through his work with Steeleye Span, the Watersons, and seemingly dozens of other folkies, possibly the single most influential figure in British folk in the last half of the 20th Century.
Accompanied only by fiddler Dave Swarbrick--who would get equal billing on ...

| | Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream CD (1993) Edited
Ship Of Fools album
$13.95 When SIAMESE DREAM was initially released in the summer of 1993 it was hailed as alternative rock's first great post-NEVERMIND hope. And while it has gone on to become an overwhelming commercial success, it has also helped further re-draw the artistic borders of "alternative" music.
By combining neo-psychedelic AOR guitars (band-members proudly claim Boston as an influence) with Pumpkin auteur Billy Corgan's "outsider" lyrical stance, SIAMESE DREAM creates a rebel image; but one with a wandering eye towards mainstream acceptance as well. Consequently, Smashing Pumpkins are equally successful relating to young lollapaloozers and to classic rock radio.
The album's immediate attraction is plain to see. Corgan and co-producer Butch Vig have sculpted a sonic wall of guitars--in some cases, using up to 32 separate guitar tracks on a single song--that is electrifying in its sheer scope and power. Along with Jimmy Chamberlin's powerhouse drumming, guitarists Corgan and James Iha's thick sound endows ...

| | Wilson Phillips California CD (2004)
Ship Of Fools songs
$6.05 As the offspring of 1960s California pop royalty (Beach Boy Brian Wilson, Mamas & Papas' John and Michelle Phillips), female vocal trio Wilson Phillips seems uniquely qualified to turn out a comeback album (after 12 years of silence) featuring covers of L.A.-centric hits from the '60s and '70s. Linda Ronstadt's "You're No Good" is ripe for revival, and here it gets a bit of a pumped-up Britney Spears-style treatment. Neil Young's "Old Man" is also the recipient of techno-friendly modernization. The trio's take on the Eagles' "Already Gone" sounds like a natural fit for contemporary-country radio.
Unsurprisingly, the most faithful renditions are the strongest--Joni Mitchell's title cut and the Youngbloods' pacific anthem "Get Together." The girls dig into the catalogs of their parents too, for a "Monday, Monday" that owes more to Sheryl Crow than to the Mamas & the Papas, and a zesty romp through the Beach Boys' "Dance, Dance, Dance." The most affecting moment on CALIFORNIA, though, is the closing track, where Brian Wilson joins his daughters and their pal for a piano-and-vocal version of his classic "In My Room."
