(1 Customer Review)
The follow-up to 1983's PAST LIGHT, 1986's CONFERRING WITH THE MOON continues that album's exploration of new settings for William Ackerman's inimitable guitar style. The album expands on its predecessor by increasing the number and variety ... Full Descriptionof instruments Ackerman plays with, but it steps back from that album's sometimes over-filled, busy arrangements by focusing on duets and trios.
Ackerman's own guitar playing, as usual, is overdubbed to add richness and depth to the sound, to the extent that his solo performance of the title track sounds in spots like two or three guitarists playing nearly--but not quite--the same piece. Elsewhere, shards of keyboard, both electric and acoustic, buffer Ackerman's watery yet never aimless playing, with reeds and percussion appearing occasionally for color. These 11 brief pieces explore and develop a variety of moods. Conferring With The Moon album
$12.78 STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," for evidence as Zorn's composition not only travels genres but centuries. The popping showcase for solos that is "Serakel" is nonetheless a grooving post-bop tune with a joyous klezmer lyric line. The sheer shimmering beauty of "Psisya," which moves from jazz ballad to bossa to Hebrew folk song and back again, is stunning. While Stolas is not completely "inside," it is far more so than most have a right to expect. For newcomers to Zorn's music, this may not sound typical of his dozens ...

| | Bill Charlap Somewhere: The Songs Of Leonard Bernstein CD (2004)
Conferring With The Moon album
$13.59 Composer songbook albums performed by jazz instrumentalists are nothing new, but pianist Bill Charlap's takes on the exuberant and tender tunes of Leonard Bernstein make for an inspired addition to this tradition. From the opening trill on drummer Kenny Washington's hi-hat, "Cool" (from WEST SIDE STORY) kicks off the proceedings, crackling with excitement. The entire track is superb, and makes one wonder why this song has not become a standard.
The performers stretch out, listening intently to one another and coming up with a fine mini-opus on "Glitter and Be Gay" (from CANDIDE), a tune that sports the more European side of Bernstein's style. As groups are wont to do after having logged many musical miles together, Charlap's trio exudes an overall rhythmic adventurousness throughout the set. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than the playfully off-kilter "America," popularized by Rita Moreno in WEST SIDE STORY, which includes tasty Ahmad Jamal-esque chording by Charlap. "Lonely Town," "Lucky to Be Me," and, especially, "Some Other Time" remind listeners that Charlap and company approach ballads with a rarefied delicacy; these tunes truly sing. With smart arrangements, ...
