Personnel: Michael Hedges (guitar, various instruments); David Crosby, Graham Nash (vocals); Michael Manring (bass). Recorded at the Speech and Hearing Clinic, Mendocino, California; Groove Masters, Santa Monica, California; live at the Lincoln Center, Fort Collins, Colorado on October 16, 1994. Torched consists of recordings that guitarist Michael Hedges was working on at the time of his fatal automobile accident in December 1997. A collection of demos, this 1999 Windham Hill release has all the intimacy listeners might expect from such a recording without the haphazard performances, as Hedges possessed uncommon technique and emotional connection with every note he played. In this raw format, the rock influences of Hedges' youth appear most notably in vocal phrasings that are more expressive, almost aggressive at times. When compared to completed studio releases, tracks like "Promised Land" and "Spring Buds" have a strong contemporary singer/songwriter cast that is generally absent in Hedges' prior recordings, which possess something of a unique new age flavor. Other cuts, like "Shell Shock Venus," cover a bit more traditional Windham Hill ground. An intellectually curious and by all accounts warm and kind human being, Hedges is represented with two fittingly serene cuts ("Java Man" and "Free Swinging Soul") that finish up Torched, a concise tribute to an extraordinarily precious artist and human being. ~ Vincent JeffriesDirty Linen (8-9/99, p.47) - "...Friends and colleagues affirm Hedges' outlook was quite positive in the months before his death....he found a way to infuse joy into his short but accomplished life." Torched
$7.59 Personnel: Michael Hedges (guitar); George Winston (piano); Michael Manring (fretless bass). Recorded at The Music Annex, Menlo Park, California. Michael Hedges's BREAKFAST IN THE FIELD is a stunningly gorgeous debut, and it's as serene and pastoral as its title implies. On this 1981 album (produced by William Ackerman for his renowned Windham Hill label), the virtuoso acoustic guitarist makes an immediate impression, garnering attention with his deft fretwork, inventive compositions, and uncanny sense of both melody and harmony. Although pianist George Winston and bassist Michael Manring make notable appearances (the latter musician is particularly prominent on "The Funky Avocado"), this record's finest moments are when Hedges is playing solo, as on the lilting "Layover," the dreamy title track, the nimble "Peg Leg Speed King," and the highly percussive "Silent Anticipations." While Hedges often gets ...
| | Michael Hedges Aerial Boundaries CD (1984)
Torched
$7.59 Personnel: Michael Hedges (guitar); Mindy Rosenfeld (flute); Mike Manring (fretless bass). Producers: William Ackerman, Michael Hedges, Steven Miller. Engineers: Steven Miller, Bill Mueller, Oliver DiCicco. Recorded at Windham Hill Inn, West Townshend, Vermont; Sheffield Studio and the Peabody Electronic Music Studio, Baltimore, Maryland; Different Fur Studio and Mobius Music, San Francisco, California. This is the finest album from Michael Hedges, the man who is responsible for the greatest revolution in solo acoustic guitar playing since Leo Kottke. There are moments on Aerial Boundaries where it seems literally impossible that so much music is coming from one man and his guitar. Attacking his instrument, snapping strings, banging on the fingerboard with his right hand, Hedges plays supremely beautiful music with the technique of a deranged lunatic. It has been said that genius is at least one part madness -- although a questionable assertion in general terms -- when applied to Hedges and ...

Also included are gospel standards and a Jelly Roll Morton medley. Beginning with his self-titled debut in 1970, Ry Cooder's records seemed to be as much history ...
| | Leo Kottke 6 & 12 String Guitar CD (1996)
Torched
$10.89 Solo performer: Leo Kottke (acoustic 6 & 12-string guitars). Recorded in 1969. Originally released on Takoma (1024). Includes liner notes by Mark Humphrey and original release liner notes by Leo Kottke. This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Solo performer: Leo Kottke (acoustic 6 & 12-string guitars). Recorded in 1969. Originally released on Takoma (1024). Leo Kottke's debut came about after he sent a cassette to John Fahey's Takoma label. Not surprisingly, it recalls Fahey's work in a number of respects: the synthesis of numerous influences from blues, pop, classical, and folk styles, the weirdly titled instrumentals, even the tongue-in-cheek liner notes. Kottke's brand of virtuosity, however, is more soothing and easy on the ear than Fahey's. It's far from sappy, ...
