The late 80's saw alternative music begin to infiltrate the mainstream, with such hit making acts as Depeche Mode, The Cure, and Jane's Addiction leaving an impression on the charts, radio, and MTV. It was around this time that one of the genre's founders, Siouxse & the Banshees, celebrated it's tenth anniversary as a band with their tenth studio album overall, 1988's PEEP SHOW. The album follows in the direction of its previous studio album, 86's TINDERBOX (the band had also issued an all covers release, THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, between the two) - in so much that the arrangements were much tighter than their adventurous early 80's work. Highlights included the singles "Peek A Boo," "Killing Jar," and "Last Beat of my Heart," as well as the lesser known cuts "Turn to Stone" and album closer, "Rhapsody."
Recorded at Marcus Music, London, England between January to March 1988.
Siouxsie & The Banshees: Siouxsie Sioux (vocals); Jon Klein (guitar); Martin Martin McCarrick (cello, accordion, keyboards); Steven Severin (bass); Budgie (drums, percussion, harmonica).
Siouxsie & The Banshees Peepshow Songs Peepshow Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) The Queen of Goth This album helped cement that image but this is more than that - it's an inventive and enjoyable record. It's almost worth getting just for 'Peek-a-boo' and 'Every Beat of My Heart'. One of their best albums. Submitted by lee.middlehurst (Manchester, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
One of Sioux's best I mirror the sentiment of the reviewer who said that Peepshow was one of the best albums to come out in 1988.
Siouxsie's voice was in top form and better than ever. The songs are darkly ethereal and delve into new areas for the band. This album is still ahead of its time almost twenty years later.

The Original Queen of Goth Peep Show is a briliant album, both musically and artistically. Siousie Sioux writting is way ahead of it's time when the album was released and it sets the stage for other female song writters. The dark moodiness of the album touches you heart in unexplainable ways. It's this dark appeal and stylism the makes her the original queen of goth.

SWEET This cd for me is one of the best records that came out of 1988. Songs like scarecrow, rhapsody, killing jar & the last beat of my heart are just songs that simply move me with all the beauty that Siouxsie & the Banshees can bring to ones ear & heart. Peep Show fizzles but still intrigues If much of their previous work was "fireworks", this album is more like a firecracker. The album is inconsistent and lacks bite and strong material, except for Rhapsody, Ornaments Of Gold, Peep Show, and the gorgeous Last Beat of My Heart. Peepshow
$6.39 Although Siouxse & the Banshees had been enjoying chart success back home in England since almost the very beginning of their career in the late 70's, the group had yet to make much of an impact on the American record buying public (despite releasing such exceptional goth classics as 1980's KALEIDOSCOPE and 81's JUJU). The band's seventh release overall, 84's HYAENA, was the first Banshees release to make an impact on the U.S. charts - even though it was far from a blockbuster stateside. ...

$6.35 Siouxsie And The Banshees did well for themselves in poaching John McGeoch from Magazine; his punchy guitar work gives KALEIDOSCOPE its shimmer and sparkle (ex-Sex Pistol Steve Jones also contributes guitar to some tracks). Particular classics featured here include the U.K. Top 10 hit "Happy House," ...

Peepshow
$6.49 Siouxse & the Banshees were never afraid to experiment with other musical styles while using their trademark gothic sound as a starting point, as heard throughout their 1981 release, JUJU. Their previous release, KALEIDOSCOPE, saw the band letting synthesizer seep into their ethereal sound, and on JUJU, experiment with Middle Eastern and psychedelic sounds with a more direct (almost traditional) rock approach. Over ...

$8.29 With their 1984 release, HYAENA, Siouxse & the Banshees dropped more than just a few hints that they were entering very melodic territory (their cover of the Beatles' "Dear Prudence," etc.). And they delivered on their promise with their follow up two years later, 1986's TINDERBOX. The Banshees also took a detour from the challenging and unpredictable arrangements that they had been indulging in on their ...

$7.29 THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS is a collection of cover versions of the band's favorite songs.
By the late 80's, most Siouxse & the Banshees fans must have realized by now to expect anything with a new release, after all, this was a band that could alternate between challenging psychedelic goth (HYAENA) and more melodic, pop-oriented material (TINDERBOX). So when the band decided ...
