An aural postcard of Gabriel's 1993-1994 "Us World Tour," SECRET WORLD LIVE is demonstrative of this studio perfectionist's ability to produce singular, textured works in any setting. He has always surrounded himself with first-class players who shared his vision of incorporating world music into the Western pop vocabulary (guitarist David Rhodes, bassist Tony Levin and drummer Manu Katche have been with Gabriel the better part of ten years). To expand the music's breadth, for the "Us" tour he added noted jazz violinist Shankar and vocalist Paula Cole to the band and restructured the songs to reflect the more celebratory aspects of live performances. This mix provides SECRET WORLD LIVE with its world-beat meets new age jazz meets English art-soul sound.
Created in the wake of U2's extravagant "Zoo TV," the "Us" shows were also multi-media blow outs, thematically connected to Gabriel's then-current explorations of psychotherapy. In fact, the second half of the album incorporates previous hits--the sexually charged "Sledgehammer," the elegiac "Don't Give Up" (with Cole playing Kate Bush's part), and the anthemic "In Your Eyes"--into a song-cycle that explores the consequences of the inner fears of youth and love's ability to insulate one from that pain. It all makes Gabriel's SECRET WORLD LIVE add up to a musical stew that is equal parts William Gibson, Carl Jung and Fela Kuti.

Secret World Live album
$11.19 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster Sara ...

| | Mark Erelli Compass & Companion CD (2001)
Secret World Live songs
$13.95 Mark Erelli has developed a reputation as powerful singer/songwriter, and Compass & Companion shows that his reputation is well-deserved. There is a great deal of musical variety on this album that keeps the listener paying attention. "Why Should I Cry" is a nice piece of Western swing with some great guitar playing, while "Before I Knew Your Name" is straight folk. Erelli is in good voice for this recording, and has written a number of insightful songs. "Before I Knew Your Name" is an evocative piece, capturing how love transforms our familiar surroundings. There is also an angry streak in Erelli, as on "Free Ride," where he castigates a young person who believes the world waits for him. "Did you think they'd part the seas for you like Moses?," he asks cuttingly. Despite a little anger here and there, he holds onto his sense of humor in the catchy "Little Sister," bragging that "My little sister makes more than you/What is this crazy world coming to?." There are a number of songs about problematic relationships. These songs don't always work, especially on "Miracle Man" where Erelli rebukes a lover with "I can't change/The water to wine/I can't pull you up/If you don't want to climb." Such triads can come off as self-serving. Still, it should be pointed out that "Miracle Man," like most of the songs on Compass & ...

| | Knievel Name Rings A Bell That Drowns Out Your Voice CD (2002)
Secret World Live CD music
$12.85 Hitting their stride after seven years of delivering the goods in the underground, Knievel shines on the understated The Name Rings a Bell That Drowns out Your Voice. Gentle harmonies drift along the lulling and quiet guitars with an easy grace, swirling around the harmonies with a deft simplicity. This is a beautiful slice of indie pop that benefits from a sparse songwriting style that emphasizes the melodies first and the individual instruments second. By cutting the fat, they only enhance the power of the ringing guitars and occasional ethereal strings that drive along the music. Knievel's moody sound calls to mind influences as far reaching as the Posies, Codeine, and Bettie Serveert, but does so with a distinct personal approach that is unmistakably their own. They've always been a dependable band, but The Name Rings a Bell That Drowns out Your Voice marks an artistic step forward that should appeal to fans of solid indie pop. ~ Bradley Torreano
Knievel last visited the US to play CMJ and a few other low-key shows. At home in Australia they have supported Buffalo Tom, Teenage Fanclub, Luna, Joe Pernice, Chris Knox, The Posies, You Am I and in 2000 they toured with Ken Stringfellow both as his backing band and support act.Their third record, The Name Rings A Bell That Drowns Out Your Voice has been released in Australia ...
