With strong melodies and a compelling vocal style, Lisa Loeb is emerging as one of the decade's most talented budding singer/songwriters. TAILS shifts gears between soft, lilting folk-rock and big, guitar-based pop, and proves that this talented New Yorker is clearly defining her sound with every well-placed note. Of course the tempting cliche, used too often by rock critic-types, is to proclaim any woman whose voice doesn't spit and snarl as "vulnerable." And yes, Loeb does have a certain wistfulness about her.
Yet the writer behind songs like "It's Over" and "Do You Sleep" is less vulnerable than confused, lovestruck and, at times, bitter. "Over" starts with a simple guitar strum, a la Joni Mitchell and early Suzanne Vega. But the song builds, through electric guitars, harmonizing voices, and a soaring chorus about a rough topic: "The drone in your voice and the fly on the wall said/It's over, it's over it's over it is." "Sleep" also starts quietly, but develops into near-anthem status, with Tim Bright's sweeping, ringing guitar work carrying Loeb to a new level of emotive strength. "Waiting For Wednesday" is another highlight, a clean-edged pop/rock jewel, faceted with luxurious guitars and fine, upper-register harmonies.
TAILS is a collection at once beautiful and spare, self-conscious and totally accessible. Loeb embodies that rarest of combinations--a fine singer and an even better writer. And in the end, listening to it is like sinking, slowly, into a pool of warm water on a cool night. The steam rises, but the body and spirit are calmed.

best album personally this is her best album. the songs are unique and they're not those typical love songs. Stay may be a hit but other songs are beautiful as well. those who love this kind of music will love this album Submitted by myeyewinker (cambridge,MA) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
A Stylish Album With A Classic Song There are 2 reviews and no one says anything about the song that caught people's attention and is irresistable to not sing to "stay". All in all the album is pretty good but "Stay" is classic. Submitted by asgoodasrhoads (South Bend, IN) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
Great Personality, Amazing production This is a really good lbum, it should be an example for any pop/rock singers/band in how to have really great songs, rich harmons, melodies, climax, to sound perfectly in harmony. She is better than on the other two recorded after. You should give this girl a chance to proof that new stuff can still be done. I surrender to you Lisa ! To all of you, good listening ! I would like a date, please Wow....I must say I am surprised at the negative reviews of this album,if anything this is her best album and a true masterpiece...yep...I said it and stand by it....while I can not say that about any of her other CD's...albeit I like Firecracker.
I really like Lisa's songwriting style and her voice.I can't understand why anybody would say her voice sucks when people actually think Britany Spears can sing.
I say buy the album,it's full of great songs that make you wanna sing them and sing them loud.
And I wanna date with Lisa....why is she always dating bums on her #1 single show...I think she is one of the few artists I have seen that didn't seemed ruined by her success.Go out with me,Lisa...I show you good time.
