Recorded live between 1989 and 1994. Includes liner notes by Krist Novoselic.
The electric smashes and thrashes compiled on FROM THE MUDDY BANKS OF THE WISHKAH were originally intended as half of a double album; the other half would have been the acoustic show released as MTV UNPLUGGED IN NEW YORK. But after Kurt Cobain's death, UNPLUGGED was released on its own, and the task of putting together a live electric disc was put aside for a couple years.
Now completed, FROM THE MUDDY BANKS OF THE WISHKAH (named for a river that cuts through Nirvana's hometown, Aberdeen, Washington) serves as a perfect mirror to UNPLUGGED. Where that one offered a recontextualization of Nirvana's oeuvre, this one offers a reaffirmation of the band's raw power. All the elements that made the band a legend are present here: piledriver rhythm section, scabrous guitar work that combines a Neil Young-ish tone with a punk sensibility, and Cobain's anguished, sandpaper vocal delivery.
Many of Nirvana's best-known songs are included in versions that double the intensity and aggression (and sometimes the speed) of the original recordings. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" finds the band charging at a pace that suggests its life depends on reaching the end of the song. "Scentless Apprentice" is a raging howl that makes the original version sound like a beer commercial.

The finest rock band of our times--still." Musician (12/96, p.87) - "...the guts and gristle of the Nirvana legend are served up smoking: Cobain's pained catarrh and smeary lead guitar, backed by the busy thump of the rhythm section, push along presciently written songs that merge cannily contrived melody with an ardent directness..." Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) List All 10 Reviews POWER!!! This album showcases Nirvana's raw power as a live band and it rocks! Kurt and the lads put their backs into on this one and put loads of passion into it. This is a goodie to turn up way too loud, and just ROCK OUT!!!!! great album really dont listen to it much anymore, but it is great, AND VERY LOUD. i wanted to clear up some things that another reviewer said about spank thru (which is on here) and tourette's. We'll start with tourettes. Krist opens up by saying "for all you bootleggers out there, this is called The Eagle Has Landed." it was a joke on bootleggers, who listed the song as the eagle has landed instead of tourettes on there bootlegs. Spank Thru was the first Nirvana song AND IS NOT AN EARLY VERSION OF ABOUT A GIRL. Not even close. Get "Sliver, The Best of the Box" and listen to it, the 1985 version. This is two years before anything else on the box set, which makes that cd worth the 15 bucks. There is also a fantastic studio version of that song on the Sub Pop 200 cd, which features other grunge bands as well. Im gonna buy that cd soon. Well this cd is there best live cd and shows the real Nirvana. THEY ARE A LIVE BAND. This is how they did it and if you only have studio versions or unplugged, your not getting the whole picture. The Muddy Banks This is a good live album for Nirvana fans. Contrary to what the title may seem to imply, though, this is not one concert recorded at the "muddy banks of the Wishkah," that is just a name they came up with after a river in Aberdeen. This is actually put together from several different shows. The "Intro" starts with some bass rumbling, then theres a riff, and Kurt starts screaming...so enters School. The guitar line sounds just as great live as it does in the studio. I like the live version of Drain You maybe a bit more than the studio version, but that's an exception. Most of the songs don't sound even close to as great live as the studio versions do. Negative Creep is pretty bad, but namely the biggest example is Tourette's which happens to be my favorite Nirvana song (don't ask). The studio version kicks ass, but the live version made me want to barf. Of course I guess that's no big deal because 1) live songs never sound as good as studio versions anyway, and for good reasons, 2) Tourette's is just screaming jibberish, so of course Kurt can't get it the same each time, it's always different, and 3) Tourette's didn't even have a studio version yet at the time of the live recording, and was just an experimental song (it's sort of strange, because Krist, or at least I think it's Krist, says before they play the song that it's called "The Eagle Has Landed", so they might have not had a permanent name yet, like many of their songs, i.e. Pay To Play - Stay Away, but also that's just Nirvana's sort of humor I guess). And one last thing, this is the only album other than any single or the box set that has the song "Spank Thru" on it. Krist claims this in the booklet to be the first Nirvana song, but a common claim is that it was About A Girl. Either way, I doub they were the first song Kurt wrote ever, and it doesn't matter anyway. Anyway, Spank Thru is about masturbation, oh yay :-\, and is a unique song. Well, this is a good live album for fans. Submitted by DarkTemplar04J (Oxford, MA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
