In an age of pre-fabs, readymades and wannabes, it's a gas gas gas to hear the truth, the guts of rock and roll peek through the curtains of time. VOODOO LOUNGE is a remarkable experience, the most visceral, daring Rolling Stones album since...who knows when.
Without seeking to alter their basic approach, producer Don Was has given this classic band a contemporary perspective. VOODOO LOUNGE proves that the Stones are still hard after 30 years on the world stage. There's an edge and a sense of danger to VOODOO LOUNGE that is palpable from the reassuring crunch of Richards and Wood on the opening "Love Is Strong," through the honky tonk bump of "Baby Break It Down" and the blue suede groove of "Mean Disposition."
The departure of bassist Bill Wyman has forced the Stones to dig deep, and the arrival of Darryl Jones has given drummer Charlie Watts, if not a new lease on life, a different point of view. Watts and Wyman were like the Benny Benjamin and James Jamerson of rock'n'roll, and without his trusted rhythm mate, the drummer has to listen like his life depended on it. Because producer Don Was insisted Mick have actual lyrics ready for the basic tracks, it obliged the Stones to return to the kind of live, spontaneous rhythm section feel that made even their most humble throwaways just jump out and bite you on the ass.
VOODOO LOUNGE won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.

Rolling Stone (8/11/94, p.65) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...VOODOO LOUNGE, is ragged and glorious, reveling in the quintessential rock & roll the Stones marked as their own some 30 years ago...the songs on VOODOO LOUNGE find the Stones charged with renewed musical nerve..." Q (8/94, p.109) - 3 Stars - Good - "...VOODOO LOUNGE is no classic, but nor is it the resounding hound it could have been. And with `Out Of Tears' they prove there are still tantalising glimmers of genius..." Musician (8/94, p.86) - "...There are substances, style and newness here that--for the first time in many years--make a Rolling Stones album seem more a work of art than Phase One of a three-year business plan..." Mojo (Publisher) (1/95, p.52) - Included in Mojo's "25 Best Albums of 1994". | Voodoo Lounge Music Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) well... the only classic sounding stones track is "Love is Strong". It runs too long and basically has not aged well. There are some high points through out but your mot missing out if you do not purcahse this CD. That goes with the 2 other studio releases after this. I think Steel Wheels was the last solid Stones album. Of course with Bill Wyman on Bass. Basically buy any albums with him on bass. Those are the good Stones albums period. "Its Only Rock and Roll" Not one good track on the whole thing. If you must have it, pick it up at a used cd store. Submitted by chastua (florida) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Possibly Their Best Album! After a decade of declining popularity in the 1980's and a five year absence in the early 90's, the Stones resurfaced in 1994 with "Voodoo Lounge," their most powerful album since, possibly, 1981's "Tatoo You." The Rolling Stones proved that after thirty years, they could still rock, and with "Voodoo Lounge," they rocked harder than most current bands of that time! $15.98 Unlike its 2002 predecessor Back in the U.S., Good Evening New York City doesn't cherrypick highlights from a tour, it commemorates a specific event: the inauguration of Citi Field -- the replacement for the now-defunct Shea Stadium, where the Beatles played a legendary show in 1965 -- in the summer of 2009. The circumstances may be different -- different enough to lead to a Billy Joel cameo on "I Saw Her Standing There," the piano man returning a favor from Paul, who played at Billy's Shea-closing shows in 2008 -- and McCartney might have two strong albums of new material to draw upon, but as an album, Good Evening New York City plays a lot like Back in the U.S. with a whopping 17 of its 35 tracks shared between the two titles. More importantly, the vibe is the same, with Macca delivering an expertly balanced and sequenced set with all the skill of the old pro that he is. Apart from the inclusion of "Mrs. Vanderbilt" and "I'm Down," there are no surprises, either in song selection or performance, but no surprises doesn't mean no satisfaction, and this is plenty entertaining

| | John Fogerty Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again CDs (2009) With DVD; Deluxe Edition
Voodoo Lounge
$14.29 John Fogerty released his first solo CD, an album of covers on which he played all the instruments, under the name the "Blue Ridge Rangers," and he revives that concept on 2009's THE BLUE RIDGE RANGERS RIDES AGAIN. Where the first smacked of the righteous zeal of a young purist, RIDES AGAIN is a lot looser in its attack, which is reflected in the way it splits the difference between country and rockabilly classics and reflective numbers from '70s songwriters. These unexpected covers of John Prine, Delaney & Bonnie, and John Denver offer a peek at a sweeter, gentler Fogerty, a Fogerty who can also be heard on how he lays back instead of pushing ahead on Buck Owens' "I Don't Care (Just as Long as You Love Me)" and Ray Price's "I'll Be There," and even on his revamp of his own neglected swamp rocker ...

Voodoo Lounge
$12.39 Columbus, OH-based House of Heroes are a Christian rock band to join the ranks of Relient K and the roster at Tooth and Nail to serve as the soundtrack to many a church youth group overnight. While this kind of association might scare off potential listeners on principle alone, these people would be doing themselves a disservice because, well, House of Heroes make damn good music. Engaging enough for secular and non-secular fans alike, Say No More -- technically just a repackaged, retitled, and reissued version of the band's 2005 self-titled effort with two extra tracks -- is a solid record of catchy and confident indie pop that owes a huge amount of influence to Weezer. Lead vocalist Tim Skipper (all members of the trio share vocal duties) even sounds remarkably similar to Rivers Cuomo on much of this energetic album. Lyrically, the band's religious stance overtly appears on only a few tracks, as in the somber "Serial Sleepers" -- most of the time, the band prefers instead to address social inequities and relationship issues. Presumably, it's their faith that merely acts as the basis for which their opinions are formed. "Fast Enough" runs on a bassline straight off a Midtown record, followed by the charmingly simple "Friday Night" -- a melodic power pop gem about weekend loneliness with an instantly catchy hook. ...
