In an age of pre-fabs, readymades and wannabes, it's a gas gas gas to hear the truth, the guts of rock and roll peek through the curtains of time. VOODOO LOUNGE is a remarkable experience, the most visceral, daring Rolling Stones album since...who knows when.
Without seeking to alter their basic approach, producer Don Was has given this classic band a contemporary perspective. VOODOO LOUNGE proves that the Stones are still hard after 30 years on the world stage. There's an edge and a sense of danger to VOODOO LOUNGE that is palpable from the reassuring crunch of Richards and Wood on the opening "Love Is Strong," through the honky tonk bump of "Baby Break It Down" and the blue suede groove of "Mean Disposition."
The departure of bassist Bill Wyman has forced the Stones to dig deep, and the arrival of Darryl Jones has given drummer Charlie Watts, if not a new lease on life, a different point of view. Watts and Wyman were like the Benny Benjamin and James Jamerson of rock'n'roll, and without his trusted rhythm mate, the drummer has to listen like his life depended on it. Because producer Don Was insisted Mick have actual lyrics ready for the basic tracks, it obliged the Stones to return to the kind of live, spontaneous rhythm section feel that made even their most humble throwaways just jump out and bite you on the ass.
VOODOO LOUNGE won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.
Recorded at Windmill Lane Recording, Dublin, Ireland.

Rolling Stone (8/11/94, p.65) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...VOODOO LOUNGE, is ragged and glorious, reveling in the quintessential rock & roll the Stones marked as their own some 30 years ago...the songs on VOODOO LOUNGE find the Stones charged with renewed musical nerve..." Q (8/94, p.109) - 3 Stars - Good - "...VOODOO LOUNGE is no classic, but nor is it the resounding hound it could have been. And with `Out Of Tears' they prove there are still tantalising glimmers of genius..." Musician (8/94, p.86) - "...There are substances, style and newness here that--for the first time in many years--make a Rolling Stones album seem more a work of art than Phase One of a three-year business plan..." Mojo (Publisher) (1/95, p.52) - Included in Mojo's "25 Best Albums of 1994". | Voodoo Lounge Music Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) well... the only classic sounding stones track is "Love is Strong". It runs too long and basically has not aged well. There are some high points through out but your mot missing out if you do not purcahse this CD. That goes with the 2 other studio releases after this. I think Steel Wheels was the last solid Stones album. Of course with Bill Wyman on Bass. Basically buy any albums with him on bass. Those are the good Stones albums period. skip this one this is their worst album since
"Its Only Rock and Roll" Not one good track on the whole thing. If you must have it, pick it up at a used cd store. Submitted by chastua (florida) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Possibly Their Best Album! After a decade of declining popularity in the 1980's and a five year absence in the early 90's, the Stones resurfaced in 1994 with "Voodoo Lounge," their most powerful album since, possibly, 1981's "Tatoo You." The Rolling Stones proved that after thirty years, they could still rock, and with "Voodoo Lounge," they rocked harder than most current bands of that time! Voodoo Lounge
$9.58 San Francisco's Train hit the charts with a bang early in the 21st century with hits like "Calling All Angels" and "Drops of Jupiter." They began as a band that courted an alternative audience and quickly traded it -- without changing their sound much -- for a more adult fanbase with mixed results. SAVE ME, SAN FRANCISCO took four years to make -- remember there was Monahan's solo album in the interim -- and involved a slew of musicians (because only Monahan, guitarist Jimmy Stafford, and drummer Scott Underwood remain from the original group), four studios in the United States and England, songwriting collaborators, and even a handful of producers, though ...

| | Mark Knopfler Get Lucky CD (2009)
Voodoo Lounge
$15.65 With the release of GET LUCKY, Mark Knopfler has made as many solo studio albums as he made group studio albums with Dire Straits, which itself may be a signal that it's time to stop comparing his two careers and simply accept them as separate entities. Of course, since Knopfler was the lead singer, chief instrumentalist, and songwriter for Dire Straits, there are obvious similarities, even if he has taken a deliberately different path as a solo artist. Basically, he's a lot quieter. "Border Reiver," the first song here, begins with a pennywhistle and a piano, then strings join in. Soon enough, Knopfler's distinctive conversational baritone begins calmly intoning lyrics, and eventually there are examples of his melodic fingerpicked guitar style on both acoustic and electric guitar. He even works up to a smoldering swamp rock shuffle, a la J.J. Cale, on "Cleaning My Gun." But that's as close as he comes to really rocking out. More typical is "Hard Shoulder," a ballad that employs a twangy guitar sound and comes across as a number that Glen Campbell could have had a hit with back in his late-'60s "Wichita Lineman" heyday. The tunes support Knopfler's story-songs and musical character studies, as he describes or embodies truck drivers ...

| | Beatles Revolver CD (1966) Limited Edition; Remastered; Digipak; Enhanced CD
Voodoo Lounge
$15.25 This reissue of REVOLVER has been digitally re-mastered. It comes packaged with replicated original U.K. album art, an expanded booklet containing original and newly written liner notes, and rare photos. Limited quantities of the CD are embedded with a brief documentary film about the album.
Arguably the first psychedelic rock album, REVOLVER was praised for its musical experimentation--the Indian sounds of "Love You To," the Motown-inspired "Got To Get You Into My Life," the backwards guitar in "I'm Only Sleeping." "Tomorrow Never Knows" was the most radical departure from previous Beatles' recordings for its skeletal bass/drums propulsion enhanced only with tape loops (contributed by all four Beatles and added in the mix-down process), more backwards guitar, and an eerie John Lennon vocal.
Still, the Beatles' experimentation grew out of their songwriting, which had matured beyond formula pop. "Tomorrow Never Knows" was inspired by the Tibetan Book of the Dead, Harrison's "Taxman" was a bitter diatribe, and McCartney's "Eleanor Rigby" was a bleak portrait of loneliness. Balanced with upbeat songs like "Good Day Sunshine" and "Yellow Submarine," REVOLVER proved ...
| | Buckcherry Live & Loud 2009 CD (2009)
Voodoo Lounge
$8.49 When Buckcherry hit the scene in the mid-'90s, few would have predicted that the raunchy, stripper pole/retro-hair metal outfit had a 15-year career ahead of it, let alone a Grammy nomination. Despite the nearly complete dissolution of the band in 2002, Buckcherry managed to embrace the subversive tenacity of chief inspiration Mötley Crüe by ignoring the naysayers and keeping the train running with a pair of well-received albums that successfully ...
