Recorded live at The Bottom Line, New York, New York in April 1997 and at Studio 900, New York, New York.

Old-fashioned Texas blues man Johnny Winter may not seem like a high-tech kind of guy, but LIVE IN NYC '97 proves otherwise. Through his web site, Winter invited fans to vote for their favorite blues standards. Then he got together a hot young rhythm section, bassist Mark Epstein and drummer Tom Compton, rented out the Bottom Line in New York City, and invited members of his fan club for a special private show in April, 1997. This impressive live album is the result. There's only one Winter original, his collaboration with/tribute to Johnny "Guitar" Watson, "Johnny Guitar."

The rest of the nine-song set consists of blues standards by Snooks Eaglin, Elmore James, Ray Charles, and Albert King, whose "Hideaway" gets a treatment that's close to definitive. In front of an obviously appreciative crowd, and with a solid, empathetic rhythm section behind him, Winter seemingly effortlessly pulls off some of the best playing of his career. Essential for fans.

This is a good CD. It gives a variety of songs that demontrates Jonny Winter's great talent as a guitarist. It is probably one of the best concerts he has done that plays the blues and Rock together.

5 stars Have to be among the best from the best guitar slinger ever!
Johnny Winter was stellar in this live performance which was dedicated to his appreciative fans worldwide. The nicest thing about Johnny Winter is that he loves his fans as much as they adore him. The nine tracks on this CD are so warm and enjoyable, I can listen to them 24/7 for weeks on end, and won't begin to get tired of them. And, the song covers were hand picked by the man himself specially for his fans. What a great CD from a great person! It is a must have for everyone.

5 stars ANOTHER GREAT RELEASE FROM THE MASTER!!!!!
This guy is the greatest there ever was or ever will be & this cd is another chapter in his tremendous discography. Check out the excellent guitar work on songs like Hidaway & Drop The Bomb or the outstanding blues guitar feel on Blackjack. There is no one better. This live recording does not have the hard rockin sound And Live or Captured Live had, it is Johnny giving you the blues the way it was meant to be played!!!!!!

2 stars Not the man he used to be
No question,Johnny Winter is one of the all time great guitar slingers. However,on this release he is only a fraction of what he once was. I saw him in concert not long after this album was released(the setlist was almost identical to this cd) and the cat could hardly stand up,let alone play! If you want to hear Johnny smoke check out his Alligator albums!
