For his second solo album, Keith Richards didn't mess too much with the formula that made his first outing (and all the "Keith songs" on Stones albums through the years) so great: smoldering, mid-tempo rockers with plenty of sloppy leads, simple rock melodies, and dabs of dub reggae and old-school soul. While it didn't make the commercial splash that his 1988 solo debut did, it is every bit as good. The stripped down production ensures that it will continue to age well amidst changing sonic fashions.
All songs written or co-written by Keith Richards.

The first solo outing from Mr. Rock & Roll himself, TALK IS CHEAP is a solid, rootsy effort with something for everyone. The opening cut, "Big Enough," mines a deep funk groove (abetted by veteran funksters Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell of Parliament/Funkadelic fame) and makes it clear that the set will not be pure Stones revival. While "Take It So Hard" kicks off with the clarion call of Keith Richards's signature guitar sound and echoes the vibe of Stones songs "Happy" and "Tumbling Dice," it lays claim to its own distinctive mood.
"I Could Have Stood You Up" hearkens back to the swinging rock & roll of the 1950s, complete with doo-wop backing vocals and honky-tonk piano, before segueing into mid-tempo, emotive tracks "Make No Mistake" and "You Don't Move Me," recalling late-'70s Dylan. The third album by the mysterious Austin collective Attack Formation provides more of the bewildering same as their first two. We Are Alive in Tune is, at heart, a quirky electronic pop album, but there are so many cooks in this kitchen that shards of hip-hop, experimental sound collage, hardcore punk riffage, unexpectedly poppy indie rock, and just plain noise percolate through the tracks to the point that songs like "Black Magic" at times quite literally sound like three or four different songs playing at once. The disorienting musical shifts are clearly the entire point, so the easiest way to approach We Are Alive in Tune is the same spirit as those exceedingly doctrinaire British post-punk records of the late '70s. (Attack Formation even have a similar bare-bones graphic design aesthetic, as far as that goes.) Entertainment in the familiar sense is almost beside the point ...
