Released in 1992, Pearl Flapper's S' Wonderful: The Music of George Gershwin is similar to this label's Rodgers & Hart collection; the two albums were issued concurrently. What's different about the Gershwin package is the predominance of one artist -- Fred Astaire -- who is heard in seven different performances, and the inclusion of one definitive jazz instrumental: "I Got Rhythm" as performed by Afro-American drummer and bandleader Chick Webb with a small group billed as his Little Chicks. Given the enormously important role that "I Got Rhythm" played in the development of jazz during the 1930s (a vast number of "original" swing tunes were based upon this melody's chord progressions), Webb's spirited rendition assumes enormous importance and relevance here. Still and all, this is mainly a pop vocal retrospective that focuses upon stars of stage and screen. In addition to Fred Astaire and his sister Adele, participants include Al Jolson, Bing Crosby, Gertrude Lawrence, Dorothy Dickson, Lawrence Tibbett, Anne Jamison, Buddy Lee & the Gilt-Edged Four, Cliff Edwards as Ukelele Ike, and Paul Whiteman & His Orchestra. George Gershwin's melodies have been utilized in the realization of some of humanity's finest moments. This collection is a nice way to get to know a few of them, or bring them back up out of the veils of memory. ~ arwulf arwulf
