Personnel: Art Pepper (saxophone); George Cables (piano); George Mraz (bass); Elvin Jones (drums). Recorded live at the Village Vanguard, New York, New York between July 28 & 30, 1977. Originally released on Contemporary (7650). Personnel: Art Pepper (clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); George Cables (piano); Elvin Jones (drums). Liner Note Author: Peter Keepnews. Recording information: Village Vanguard, New York, NY (07/28/1977-07/30/1977). Unknown Contributor Roles: Elvin Jones; George Cables; George Mraz. The fourth of four CD reissues taken from Art Pepper's three nights at the Village Vanguard in July 1977, as with the other releases, adds one selection ("Scrapple from the Apple") to the music of the original LP; all of the performances on this and the other sets have since been made available as part of a massive nine-CD box set. The great altoist was clearly excited to be playing at the famous New York club, and his rhythm section -- pianist George Cables, bassist George Mraz and drummer Elvin Jones -- consistently stimulates his imagination. This release has more variety than usual, for in addition to his alto playing (including a memorable unaccompanied solo on "Over the Rainbow"), Pepper switches to clarinet for the lengthy "More for Les" and interprets the ballad "These Foolish Things" on tenor. The nine-CD set is essential for Art Pepper fanatics, but those just wanting a taste of the great altoist's talents will be satisfied with this release. ~ Scott Yanow

This is the real deal. I've had this cd for years. It's still some of the best jazz I've ever heard. The real treat, however, is the memories it brings every time I listen to this beautiful music. Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas without this music. GET THIS VERSION...NOT THE "NEWLY REMASTERED" VERSION. The new version is terrible and doesn't even have the original music. THIS is the version to have. This music will still sound good in another 40 years! I miss Vince and Charles. Submitted by lwwarren1 (Atlanta, GA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Charlie Brown Christmas
$10.99 Personnel: Vince Guaraldi (piano); Monty Budwig (bass); Colin Bailey (drums). Personnel: Vince Guaraldi (piano); Gigi Gryce (alto saxophone); Colin Bailey (drums). Liner Note Author: Lee Mendelson. Recording information: SF (1964). Unknown Contributor Roles: Colin Bailey; Monty Budwig. Originally entitled Jazz Impressions of a Boy Named Charlie Brown, this is an important album not only because it is Guaraldi's first Peanuts soundtrack, but also because the music heard here probably introduced millions of kids (and their parents) to jazz from the mid-'60s onward. Actually, this music is the score for a documentary on the Peanuts phenomenon called A Boy Named Charlie Brown, which ...

Charlie Brown Christmas
$10.39 Personnel: Fernando Jimenez (clarinet, trumpet, trombone, tuba); Francisco Agnaldo Ramos (percussion). Liner Note Author: Jenni Rivera. Recording information: Estudios; HIT Productions; San Angel Culiacan. Photographer: Caesar Lima. Arrangers: Daniel Ramos; Oscar Sotelo, Jr.; Tony Espinoza. On her 2007 album, MI VIDA LOCA, Jenni Rivera presents another rousing set of Mexican banda tunes. One of the few female performers in the style, Rivera imbues her songs with striking emotion, never allowing the robust, horn-driven arrangements to dominate the proceedings. Highlights of the album include the dramatic "Mirame" and her inventive English-language revamp of the disco classic "I Will Survive." Thanks to Ricky Martin, a lot of folks who don't speak Spanish (at least not fluently) found out what the term "vida loca" means in 2000. "Vida loca" is Spanish for "crazy life," and after Martin's single "Livin' la Vida Loca" (the English-language version) became a smash hit, the term was often used by English speakers to describe large doses of wild, decadent, hedonistic fun. But on ...
