This is a 1987 release of a concert at the legendary Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen, Denmark, privately recorded by the Danske Jazz Center in November of 1969. It features legendary jazz pianist/composer with one of his most durable groups (and anybody's, come to think of it, in the late '60s through the early-to-mid-'70s) : Marty Morell on drums and the great, versatile Eddie Gomez on bass. The program of tunes contains few surprises: standards like "Stella By Starlight," "Autumn Leaves" and "Goodbye" (one of the late Frank Sinatra's favorite songs), with only one Evans original, "Five."
In this case, familiarity does not breed contempt (or boredom)--quite the opposite. Evans can be perceived as the stereotype of the brooding-yet-driving, moody, melancholic pianist, hunched over his keyboard. Not here--Evans sounds practically jaunty, as if he were playing a private party. Listen to the almost carefree, jam-session air he breathes into "California, Here I Come" and "Autumn Leaves." Gomez and Morell get caught up in the spirit of things--playing impeccably all the while, too. If you had the impression Bill Evans never had "fun," grab JAZZHOUSE and treat yourself to a seldom-heard side of the man--and hear some first-rate music while you're at it.
