| | Sonny Rollins Milestone Jazzstars In Concert CD Sonny Rollins Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Recorded during the Milestone Jazzstars Fall 1978 American tour. Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews.
This is a jazz fanatic's dream come true--a supergroup consisting of Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner and Ron Carter (with Al Foster on drums). This disc, culled from the best performances of the Jazzstars 1978 American Tour, features almost 75 minutes of superior, cutting-edge improvisatory jazz. One of the most appealing things about this release is its variety. It moves from the full-steam quartet ("The Cutting Edge," "Nubia" and "N.O. Blues") to duets (Tyner and Carter on "Alone Together;" Rollins and Tyner on "In A Sentimental Mood") and solo spots (Rollins imaginative inventions in "Continuum" and Tyner's gorgeous keyboard work on "A Little Pianissimo").
Tyner's years with Coltrane serve him in excellent stead as he becomes the glue which holds this loosely-knit yet perfectly calibrated group together. His combination of free-flowing ideas and beautiful skeleton structures are matched by the sinuous bass lines of Carter. Rollins, coming off of several decades playing beside the greats and heading his own ensembles, is in fine form too, casting about between furious, speedy soloing, traditional tone-rich melody lines and avant-skronk. The result is an ensemble whose sound is completely modern and, at the same time, informed by the canon of jazz.

Milestone Jazzstars In Concert album
$16.09 If you're looking for some potent jazz, look no further. Pianist Herbie Hancock's V.S.O.P. - LIVE UNDER THE SKY is about as heavy as it gets. This release features the legendary mid-1960s Miles Davis lineup, minus Davis, of course. In the great trumpeter's stead, however, is the fiery Freddie Hubbard.
Recorded live in Japan during the summer of 1979, this double album features Hancock and his group combining the funky groove of ...
| | Dizzy Gillespie Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945 CD (2005)
Milestone Jazzstars In Concert CD music
$16.65 The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was no small amount of controversy surrounding this revolutionary bebop. Clearly bop was a vehicle for intricate melodic invention followed by lengthy soloing, aspects of which Parker with Gillespie were perfectly suited for. Fact is, ...

| | Mccoy Tyner Quartet CD (2007)
Milestone Jazzstars In Concert album
$13.49 McCoy Tyner's work with the John Coltrane Quartet is well documented, and this CD marks a welcome return to that format. Recorded live at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA, over New Year's, Joe Lovano does the honors in the tenor sax chair, while bassist Christian McBride and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts hold the rhythm section together with honor, passion, and drive. The world-class bassist and drummer, usually known for their overt showmanship and over the top chops, show remarkable restraint and sensitivity throughout. Tyner and friends play several of his original compositions, ...
