| | Lightnin Hopkins Soul Blues CD Lightnin Hopkins Discography of CDs
Recorded in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey in May 1964. Originally released on Prestige (7377). Includes original liner notes by Chris Albertson.
Digital remastering by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley).
Though Lightnin' Hopkins began recording in the mid-'40s in the traditional style of solo acoustic country blues, he's one of the few major blues figures who moved easily back and forth between acoustic and electric guitar and solo and full-band performances throughout his lengthy career. Recorded in 1964 for Fantasy Records, SOUL BLUES finds Hopkins in possibly his most conducive setting, playing electric guitar backed with a bassist, Leonard Gaskin; and a drummer, Herb Lovelle.
Opening with the steady-rolling, gospel-tinged "I'm Going to Build Me a Heaven of My Own," these 10 tracks are Hopkins at the top of his game. "I'm a Crawling Black Snake" puts a personal spin on some of the hoariest blues metaphors in such a way that the song sounds brand new, and "The Howling Wolf" pays tribute to another blues legend in typical Hopkins style. SOUL BLUES is small-combo blues at its best.
Personnel: Lightnin' Hopkins (vocals, guitar); Leonard Gaskin (bass); Herbie Lovelle (drums).

Joining the seemingly dozens of '70s-vintage singer/songwriters who recorded children's albums in the '90s, Judy Collins recorded BABY'S BEDTIME in 1995. As always, Collins is in excellent voice.
There's little cutesiness here, and these 26 brief songs--the large number of songs is a wise choice, since parents can play segments of the album at a time, alternating them so that they and the kids don't ...
| | Angela Bofill Angel Of The Night CD (1979) Remastered
Soul Blues CD music
$7.59 Angela Bofill proved herself extremely adroit at doing Latin, jazz, and R&B with equal finesse on her debut, Angie. Angel of the Night is the highly anticipated sophomore set originally released on GRP when it was distributed on Arista. With such a comfortable style well suited to Bofill's voice, this doesn't veer that far away from the work on the first album. The first track, the immediately classic "I Try," is beautifully sung, dramatic, and offers no false moments. The title track is just as effective in a gentle and lilting way. Angel of the Night's producers David Grusin and Larry Rosen, who also worked on Jon Lucien's 1973-1975 albums, cover some ambitious territory with a rich-voiced, quirky singer here as well. The epic "The Voyage" has the producers' sense of drama, a perfect match for Bofill's deliberate delivery, which is oddly though sweetly reminiscent of Lucien. "What I Wouldn't Do (For the Love of You)" and "The Feelin's Love" bring her to a more customary, sleek R&B material with her trademark vocals making them even better. The only thing that qualifies as a miss is a disco-style take on Thom Bell and Linda Creed's "People Make the World Go 'Round." It's not that bad, though. Angel of the Night is one of Bofill's finest and most charming albums. Any fan of sophisticated late-'70s R&B/Latin jazz need to have this in their collection. ~ Jason Elias

$42.59 This release includes a 32-page booklet and a bonus DVD featuring music videos, live footage, and a series of documentaries by Marc Gartman.
While many artists release B-sides and rarities that are often little more than curiosities, the Duluth, Minnesota band Low consistently issued excellent non-album tracks on various singles and compilations during the course of its first 10 years together (1993-2003). For an indie group with such a seemingly limited palette--male/female vocals, guitar, bass, and spare percussion--the trio is surprisingly dynamic, with songs ranging from trademark ...

Soul Blues music CDs
$9.69 Meat and potatoes zydeco, and infectious as can be, from one of the genre's pioneers. Most of the songs here are up-tempo shuffles, making it perfectly clear that this is party music at heart, but there's more variety than you'd expect. "Keep Your Dress Tail Down," for example, is a Cajun twelve-bar blues excursion, while "Gilton" and "Bernadette," which Chavis renders solo, are obviously out of an older French folk tradition. Chavis also gets off the amusingly self-referential ...
