Recorded in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey in May 1964. Originally released on Prestige (7377). Includes original liner notes by Chris Albertson. Digital remastering by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley). Though Lightnin' ... Full DescriptionHopkins began recording in the mid-'40s in the traditional style of solo acoustic country blues, he's one of the few major blues figures who moved easily back and forth between acoustic and electric guitar and solo and full-band performances throughout his lengthy career. Recorded in 1964 for Fantasy Records, SOUL BLUES finds Hopkins in possibly his most conducive setting, playing electric guitar backed with a bassist, Leonard Gaskin; and a drummer, Herb Lovelle.
Opening with the steady-rolling, gospel-tinged "I'm Going to Build Me a Heaven of My Own," these 10 tracks are Hopkins at the top of his game. "I'm a Crawling Black Snake" puts a personal spin on some of the hoariest blues metaphors in such a way that the song sounds brand new, and "The Howling Wolf" pays tribute to another blues legend in typical Hopkins style. SOUL BLUES is small-combo blues at its best.
Personnel: Lightnin' Hopkins (vocals, guitar); Leonard Gaskin (bass); Herbie Lovelle (drums).

Soul Blues album
$9.99 Best-loved lullabies sung by Judy Collins, accompanied by a 12-piece orchestra.
Joining the seemingly dozens of '70s-vintage singer/songwriters who recorded children's albums in the '90s, Judy Collins recorded BABY'S BEDTIME in 1995. As always, Collins is in excellent voice.
There's little cutesiness here, and these 26 brief songs--the large number of songs is a wise choice, since parents can play segments of the album at a time, alternating them so that they and the kids don't get bored with them as quickly--are performed in a style which appeals to adults as well as kids. In fact, some of the traditional folk ...

| | Low Lifetime Of Temporary Relief (10 Years Of B-Sides And Rarities) CDs (2004)
Soul Blues music CDs
$42.59 This release includes a 32-page booklet and a bonus DVD featuring music videos, live footage, and a series of documentaries by Marc Gartman.
While many artists release B-sides and rarities that are often little more than curiosities, the Duluth, Minnesota band Low consistently issued excellent non-album tracks on various singles and compilations during the course of its first 10 years together (1993-2003). For an indie group with such a seemingly limited palette--male/female vocals, guitar, bass, and spare percussion--the trio is surprisingly dynamic, with songs ranging from trademark slow, minimal pieces to gentle folk tunes to, yes, even punked-out rock numbers.
Of the 50-plus tracks featured here, more than a dozen are covers, ranging from a reverb-laden take on Wire's "Heartbeat" to an intentionally bad rendition of Journey's "Open Arms," with tunes by the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, the Smiths, Spacemen 3, and others scattered throughout the collection. Both the quality and wealth of material ...

| | Joe Bonamassa The Ballad Of John Henry CD (2009)
Soul Blues album
$14.05 Blues-rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa gets up to his usual tricks on THE BALLAD OF JOHN HENRY, dabbling in a variety of genres, but injecting them all with a serious dose of guitar heroics. Like his musical forefather Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bonamassa is both soulful and a shredder, and he brings those qualities to tracks like Tom ...
| | Hill Country Revue Make A Move CD (2009)
Soul Blues CD music
$12.89 The debut album by ex-North Mississippi Allstar Cody Dickinson and his new outfit with buddy Garry Burnside (the youngest of the late R.L. Burnside's 14 children), MAKE A MOVE is a juked-up marriage of primal electric blues and bar-band boogie stomp. Taut, electric, and hard-rocking, this is not purist electric blues, but gutbucket rock & roll with a strong blues influence. Highlights include "Dirty Shirt" and "Alice Mae."
Personnel: Cody Dickinson (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric ...

| | Boozoo Chavis CD (1991)
Soul Blues music CDs
$9.75 Meat and potatoes zydeco, and infectious as can be, from one of the genre's pioneers. Most of the songs here are up-tempo shuffles, making it perfectly clear that this is party music at heart, but there's more variety than you'd expect. "Keep Your Dress Tail Down," for example, is a Cajun twelve-bar blues excursion, while "Gilton" and "Bernadette," which Chavis renders solo, are obviously out of an older French folk tradition. Chavis also gets off the amusingly self-referential "Don't Worry About Boozoo" ("'Cause you know he ain't no fool," we're informed) and the cherry on the top of all this is a nice live-sounding production job by NRBQ's Terry Adams.
