Eddie Jefferson's 1968 album BODY AND SOUL reflects the year it was recorded. In contrast to Jefferson's early recordings, which focused primarily on swing, bop, and cool jazz material, BODY AND SOUL features vocalese interpretations of the post-bop and soul-jazz that were popular at the time. In a treatment of Joe Zawinul's "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy," for example, Jefferson takes the same bluesy groove that made the song a hit for Cannonball Adderley and puts his textured tenor at the center of the melody. Horace Silver's "Psychedelic Sally" evokes the heady days of the period, while Jefferson's own composition "See If You Can Git to That" revs up with gospel-soul fervor.
Fans of Jefferson's readings of classic jazz standards won't be disappointed, however, because BODY AND SOUL includes vocalese performances of the Coleman Hawkins signature tune and Miles Davis's "So What" (the versions here, performed with a small combo, are arguably better than the ones on A JAZZ SINGER). Still, the highlight of the set may be the Horace Silver tune "Filthy McNasty," a free-flowing character sketch that is as fun and raunchy as its title indicates. Jefferson's vocal skill, and his ability to thread lyrics rhythmically through tricky melody lines, is consistently impressive.

Body And Soul album
$9.89 The king of vocalese (the putting of words to pre-existing jazz instrumentals) further cemented his reputation with this fine 1961 Riverside date. Eddie Jefferson truly approached his singing with the mind of a horn player, paying particular attention to phrasing, and the form and rhythmic cadence of his applied lyrics. The result was a fun, technically intriguing take on jazz that was refreshing ...

Body And Soul CD music
$10.89 Recorded in New York between 1959 and 1965. Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather.
Before Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, and long before the Manhattan Transfer, there was Eddie Jefferson, a pioneer of vocalese--the practice of putting words to melodies based on instrumentalists' recorded jazz solos. THE JAZZ SINGER, reissued here by Evidence, is a classic slice of Jefferson's art, including some of his most memorable interpretations. Among them are his renditions of Miles Davis's "So What," Coleman Hawkins's "Body and Soul," and Charlie Parker's "Now's the Time." Jefferson ...
| | Allman Brothers Band Dreams CDs (1989) Box Set
Body And Soul music CDs
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither ...
| | Poco Forgotten Trail (1969-74) CDs (1990)
Body And Soul songs
$15.29 This compilation contains 38 songs, including many new remixes from original master tapes, 6 previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of 3 others, and a comprehensive 36 page booklet, with historic liner notes and photos.
This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) culls tracks from Poco's first eight albums, as well as unreleased cuts and singles. From the classic anthem "Pickin' Up ...
