Eddie Jefferson's 1968 album BODY AND SOUL reflects the year it was recorded. In contrast to Jefferson's early recordings, which focused primarily on swing, bop, and cool jazz material, BODY AND SOUL features vocalese interpretations of the post-bop and soul-jazz that were popular at the time. In a treatment of Joe Zawinul's "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy," for example, Jefferson takes the same bluesy groove that made the song a hit for Cannonball Adderley and puts his textured tenor at the center of the melody. Horace Silver's "Psychedelic Sally" evokes the heady days of the period, while Jefferson's own composition "See If You Can Git to That" revs up with gospel-soul fervor.
Fans of Jefferson's readings of classic jazz standards won't be disappointed, however, because BODY AND SOUL includes vocalese performances of the Coleman Hawkins signature tune and Miles Davis's "So What" (the versions here, performed with a small combo, are arguably better than the ones on A JAZZ SINGER). Still, the highlight of the set may be the Horace Silver tune "Filthy McNasty," a free-flowing character sketch that is as fun and raunchy as its title indicates. Jefferson's vocal skill, and his ability to thread lyrics rhythmically through tricky melody lines, is consistently impressive.
Originally released on Prestige (7619).

Body And Soul
$9.65 The king of vocalese (the putting of words to pre-existing jazz instrumentals) further cemented his reputation with this fine 1961 Riverside date. Eddie Jefferson truly approached his singing with the mind of a horn player, paying particular attention to phrasing, and the form and rhythmic cadence of his applied lyrics. The result was a fun, technically intriguing take on jazz that was refreshing while also paying homage to the original tunes.
LETTERS FROM HOME features compositions by, among others, Duke Ellington ("Take the 'A' Train"), Charlie Parker ("Billie's Bounce"), and Dizzy Gillespie ("A Night in Tunisia"). Each of these cuts shine with Jefferson's unique, bop-inflected singing, but the vocalist also makes room for Johnny Griffin's tenor sax and the alto ...
| | Eddie Jefferson Jazz Singer CD (1993)
Body And Soul
$10.69 Recorded in New York between 1959 and 1965. Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather.
Before Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, and long before the Manhattan Transfer, there was Eddie Jefferson, a pioneer of vocalese--the practice of putting words to melodies based on instrumentalists' recorded jazz solos. THE JAZZ SINGER, reissued here by Evidence, is a classic slice of Jefferson's art, including some of his most memorable interpretations. Among them are his renditions of Miles Davis's "So What," Coleman Hawkins's "Body and Soul," and Charlie Parker's "Now's the Time." Jefferson is backed here by a vocal trio (they add accents and embellishments) and full band (including trumpeter Howard McGee and sax man James Moody).
Jefferson's voice is flexible, and--on cuts like his famous reading of "Moody's Mood for Love"--he approximates the timbre changes a horn player might make by adjusting his tone while speeding through a phrase or making intervallic leaps. Jefferson's deft facility with lyrics, and his ability to thread them rhythmically through tricky melodic lines, is consistently impressive. Many of his ...
| | Allman Brothers Band Dreams CDs (1989) Box Set
Body And Soul
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive Allman Brothers collection nor the gift to hardcore fans that, say, THE BOOTLEG SERIES is to Dylan-philes.
DREAMS' strengths are considerable. First and foremost, the box contains nearly five wall-to-wall hours of great music. By including everything from early demos to Gregg Allman and Dickie Betts' solo material, DREAMS does a great job of tracing the group's musical evolution from hippie blues band to kings of Southern rock. And, while the unreleased studio version of "Statesboro Blues" included here isn't definitive, it's still mighty good-as ...
