Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1992, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Evans first performed with saxophonists Lee Konitz and Warne Marshe in 1959, fresh from his legendary work with Miles Davis. Though it took nearly two decades before the three collaborated again, this 1977 effort resounds with spontaneity and freshness as well as a warmth and familiarity that makes for some rewarding interaction. The cool West coast sound of Konitz blends well with Evans' sensitive, sophisticated harmonies. When longtime Evans bassist Eddie Gomez makes his presence felt, as on his solo for "Eiderdown," he proves himself to be the essential active ingredient that prods Evans along to a more visceral interplay with the two saxophonists. Three previously unreleased alternate takes, chosen by original album producer Helen Keane, spice up the package.
Recorded at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California on February 28 and March 1 & 2, 1977. Includes liner notes by Helen Keane.

Crosscurrents
$6.19 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, it was impossible to walk down the hall of any college dorm in America without hearing one of the songs here echoing from somebody's room.
Heard today, the thing still packs a wallop. Butterfield's harmonica and vocals are utterly idiomatic, without ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Crosscurrents
$6.79 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Crosscurrents
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act II" will latch onto SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA with the same passion with which they embraced THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY. And most importantly, ...
| | Antony I Am A Bird Now CD (2005)
Crosscurrents
$12.49 Though he probably achieved his greatest mainstream recognition backing up Lou Reed on tour, idiosyncratic songbird Antony is a fully established artiste in his own right. Backed by the Johnsons, as on I AM A BIRD NOW, he crafts delicate ballads that skirt the lines between cabaret, artsong, and pop, with the kind of voice that Stephin Merritt would probably kill for. Antony's unique pipes bring to mind an androgynous Bryan Ferry or a high, quavery summit meeting between Jimmy Scott (another Reed supporter) and Aaron Neville. The stately, graceful, largely piano-driven songs on I AM A BIRD NOW are full of ...
| | Dredg Catch Without Arms CD (2005)
Crosscurrents
$8.49 Early on, critics often described Dredg as a metal group. However, the quartet has since matured into a hard-edged indie-rock ensemble that seeks diversity and refinement in its music. On CATCH WITHOUT ARMS, the band favors highly orchestrated parts, dense guitar riffs, and powerful drumming. Each song is based around memorable vocal hooks and sensitive lyrical content.
Many tracks on CATCH WITHOUT ARMS have a searching quality to them. Despite the sheer ...
| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Crosscurrents
$12.89 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two ...
