The great Benny Carter was so much in demand as an arranger/composer in the studios that for 15 years, starting in the early '60s, he rarely recorded or performed in jazz settings, instead choosing to concentrate on writing movie scores. The drought ended when Carter, then in his late 60s, started recording for Pablo. As The King (his first small-group session since 1966) proves, the masterful altoist had not lost a thing through the years. In a sextet with vibraphonist Milt Jackson, guitarist Joe Pass and pianist Tommy Flanagan, Benny Carter is in masterful form, stretching out on eight of his own compositions and showing that his name always has to be ranked near the top of jazz improvisers, whether one is considering the 1930s or the 1990s. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded at RCA Studios, Los Angeles, California on February 11, 1976. Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather.
Personnel: Benny Carter (alto saxophone); Milt Jackson (vibraphone); Tommy Flanagan (piano); Joe Pass (guitar); John B. Williams (bass); Jake Hanna (drums).

| | Benny Carter Meets Oscar Peterson CD (1986)
King CD music
$8.65 Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1995, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
What would in any other instance be a potent Jazz at the Philharmonic meeting of the minds, the pairing of Oscar Peterson and Benny Carter in the studio turns out to be a neat and trim session of mutual respect between these two titans of American music. Six standards and a blues jam has Peterson deferring to Carter's alto sax in most instances, as the horn takes the lead with Peterson happy to follow. Guitarist Joe Pass seems an afterthought on most of this material, while Toronto bassist Dave Young and British drummer Martin Drew turn in a reliable and steady rhythmic performance. Young is particularly inspired, with big shoes to fill treading footprints of the brilliant Peterson at the time, Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, and is more than up to the task. Considering his age (almost 80,) Carter sounds splendid, as lyrical as ever, and with a slight hint of vibrato or legato inflections and flourishes. He sure sounds sweet, whether sighing ...

| | Benny Carter Further Definitions CDs (1966)
King songs
$10.69 FURTHER DEFINITIONS is a serious contender for Benny Carter's most essential disc (though he churned out astounding amounts of high-quality work for more than 70 years). This 1961 album was a revisitation of a '37 session Carter cut with Coleman Hawkins, Django Reinhardt, and two European saxophonists. Hawkins brings his glorious tenor back for the '61 set, while guitarist John Collins fills Reinhardt's shoes. Charlie Rouse appears on tenor sax, with Phil Woods on alto, while the crack rhythm section of Dick Katz (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass), and Jo Jones (drums) completes the personnel.
The set is, arguably, an improvement on the original, with its beautiful sound engineering, excellent arrangements (the four-horn line approximates a big band at times), and shining solo performances all around. "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Body and Soul" (on which Hawkins, of course, ...
| | Benny Carter 3, 4, 5: The Verve Small Group Sessions CD (1991)
King album
$12.69 The indomitable Benny Carter is, arguably, best known for leading and writing for large ensembles. As a result, Carter's stature as an alto saxophonist has often been overlooked. Thanks to Verve Records founder Norman Granz, however, we can hear Carter in the studio as a straight-ahead player with a series of outstanding smaller ensembles. Compiled from three different dates, some of which remained unissued domestically until this 1991 collection, ...
