Personnel: Sonny Stitt (saxophone); Jack McDuff, Leonard Gaskin, Herbie Lovelle, Gene Ludwig, Pat Martino, Randy Gelispie. Recorded in September 1963 and October 1969. Personnel: Sonny Stitt (alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); Pat Martino (guitar); Don Patterson, Gene Ludwig, Jack McDuff (organ); Gene Gelispie, Randy Gelispie, Herb Lovelle (drums). Audio Remasterer: Joe Tarantino. Liner Note Authors: Dan Morgenstern; Ralph Berton. Recording information: Englewood Cliffs, NJ (09/17/1963/10/27/1969). Photographer: Al Johnson . Two of Sonny Stitt's rarer Prestige LP's are combined together and reissued in full on this single CD. He jams on three standards and three basic originals (four on tenor and two on alto) in 1963 with organist Jack McDuff, bassist Leonard Gaskin and drummer Herbie Lovelle; "Sunday" and "Love Nest" are standouts. The later date finds Stitt on an electrified tenor (called the Varitone) which he often used in the late '60s. His distinctive tone mostly survives and he is in excellent form on boppish tunes and originals playing with a quartet that also includes organist Gene Ludwig, the young guitarist Pat Martino and drummer Randy Gelispie. Stitt recorded many records in his career so this CD is not quite essential but his fans should enjoy the above-average effort. ~ Scott Yanow Sonny Stitt Night Letter Songs Night Letter Review

| | Sly & The Family Stone Essential Sly & The Family Stone CDs (2002) Limited Edition; Remastered
Night Letter
$15.95 2cds-W/ 36 Tracks
Personnel: Sylvester "Sly Stone" Stewart (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Freddie Stone (vocals, guitar); Jerry Martini (saxophone); Cynthia Robinson (trumpet); Rose Stone (keyboards); Greg Errico, Andy Newmark (drums). Recording information: 1967-1975. Photographers: Fred Lombardi; David Redfern. The Essential Sly & the Family Stone does what a double-CD best-of/career overview should do: it packs a lot of career highlights into a two-disc set for listeners who want more than the basic greatest hits, but don't want every last album. Of course, all of those greatest hits are here, including a few from 1970 that didn't make it onto album releases at the time. As you'd expect, the fattest slice comes from Sly & the Family Stone's late-'60s/early-'70s peak: in fact, most of the tracks from the Stand! and There's a Riot Goin' On albums are here. The fun extras come in the not-too-well-known tracks from pre-Stand! ...
