| | Gene Ammons Chase! CD Gene Ammons Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Recorded live at the North Park Hotel, Chicago, Illinois on July 26, 1970. Includes liner notes by Joel Segal. Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1996, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). One came to virtually define be-bop ... Full Descriptionzone tenor sax, the other was a unique and durable stylist who had success outside the jazz mainstream: Dexter Gordon and Gene Ammons. Gordon was one of the first tenor players to bring Charlie Parker's mercurial modern gospel to that instrument, and an influence on Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. Ammons was an earthy, breathy, blues-drenched player who absorbed the advances of bop (and beyond), and who directly influenced both the R&B of the 1940's and '50s and the soul/funk/jazz of the '60s and '70s.
THE CHASE! captures them in a relaxed good-time mode, where each good-naturedly shows off their considerable abilities for a wildly appreciative audience--and each other. Recorded in Chicago in 1970, backed by a group of local luminaries (including free-jazz drum legend Steve McCall), Gordon and Ammons go to town on the swinging bop standard "Wee Dot," and ballads including "My Funny Valentine." THE CHASE! captures a freewheeling blowout of a meeting of two tenor legends, playing purely for the sheer fun of it.
Reissue producer: Ed Michel.
Personnel: Gene Ammons, Dexter Gordon (tenor saxophone); Vi Redd (vocals); John Young, Jodie Christian (piano); Cleveland Eaton, Rufus Reid (bass); Wilbur Campbell, Steve McCall (drums).
Producer: Chuck Nessa.

Chase! album
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive Allman Brothers collection nor the gift to hardcore fans that, say, THE BOOTLEG SERIES is to Dylan-philes.
DREAMS' strengths are considerable. First and foremost, the box contains nearly five wall-to-wall hours of great music. By including everything from early demos to Gregg Allman and Dickie Betts' solo material, DREAMS does a great job of tracing the group's musical evolution from hippie blues band to kings of Southern rock. And, while the unreleased studio version of "Statesboro ...

Chase! music CDs
$13.85 Recorded live at the Village Vanguard, New York, New York on December 11 & 12, 1976. Includes liner notes by Robert Palmer.
Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder (CBS Records New York Studios, New York, New York).
A double-disc document of the legendary saxophonist's gig at the Vanguard in 1976 (commemorating his return from a 15-year residence in Copenhagen), HOMECOMING captures Gordon in outstanding form. Well-seasoned and displaying elements of a more adventurous, experimental approach than was evidenced in his earlier recordings, Gordon wildly riffs through 12-bar blues ("Gingerbread Boy," "Backstairs") and creates modern, modal explorations in trumpet player Woody Shaw's two compositions ("Little Red Fantasy," and "In Case You Haven't Heard").
The classic Gordon is here as well, ...

$51.49 HOTCAKES & OUTTAKES was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Album Notes.
Based in their original incarnation around the genius of Lowell George, Little Feat's legacy has left them overlooked by the general listening public, despite a wide-ranging style that embraces blues, country, gospel, jazz, and funk. This sumptuous four-CD set impressively chronicles this mercurial band's pre- and post- Lowell George journey with rare photos, essays, and track-by-track reminisces from band members, along with a disc chock-full of rarities and outtakes.
Throughout HOTCAKES, it's hard to disagree with liner notes author Bud Scoppa's opinion that Little Feat is as rootsy as the Band, as funky as the Meters, and as cerebral as Steely Dan. Early numbers like "Willin'," "Tripe Face Boogie," and "Cold, Cold, Cold" find Little Feat going from eclectic country-fried boogie, to a syncopated New Orleans sound ...
