One came to virtually define be-bop zone tenor sax, the other was a unique and durable stylist who had success outside the jazz mainstream: Dexter Gordon and Gene Ammons. Gordon was one of the first tenor players to bring Charlie Parker's mercurial modern gospel to that instrument, and an influence on Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. Ammons was an earthy, breathy, blues-drenched player who absorbed the advances of bop (and beyond), and who directly influenced both the R&B of the 1940's and '50s and the soul/funk/jazz of the '60s and '70s.
THE CHASE! captures them in a relaxed good-time mode, where each good-naturedly shows off their considerable abilities for a wildly appreciative audience--and each other. Recorded in Chicago in 1970, backed by a group of local luminaries (including free-jazz drum legend Steve McCall), Gordon and Ammons go to town on the swinging bop standard "Wee Dot," and ballads including "My Funny Valentine." THE CHASE! captures a freewheeling blowout of a meeting of two tenor legends, playing purely for the sheer fun of it.

The four albums Brother Jack McDuff released on Atlantic between 1966 and 1968 were in a more purely R&B vein than the soul-jazz the organist played on his earlier work for Prestige. While the Atlantic dates had an eye on success in pop markets, they still offer jazz-organ fans plenty of McDuff's agile, driving sound. This reissue pulls together two of the releases from 1967. The programs are a mix of blues, pop tunes, standards, and McDuff originals. Atlantic's bid to get McDuff airplay means, in the interest of brevity, that almost half the tracks fade out on the endings. Throughout, McDuff makes a point of keeping a healthy portion of soulful grit in whatever he plays (a cornball cover of Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" being one instance where McDuff's grit goes out the window). Four of the Tobacco Road tracks have McDuff's arrangements for a five-piece horn section. The other five tracks feature McDuff's regular quartet from this period. The highlight is the definitive version of "Wade in the Water," a gospel standard also variously attributed to McDuff or to pianist Ramsey Lewis, both of whom had hits with it. Rather uniquely for a band of its generation and shared set of influences, the increasingly derogatory stylistic tags of emo and screamo really do feel like unjustified misnomers when applied to a group with as much effortless and -- most notably -- uncluttered songwriting instincts as Ontario's Boys Night Out. Their eponymous third album may not reinvent any wheel or apparatus of this Earth, but its songs do evince a power pop simplicity and sensibility that's sorely lacking within their normally self-obsessed and pretentiously indulgent peers.
