Lou Donaldson Natural Soul CD (1962)

Bonus Tracks; Remastered |
Legends of Acid Jazz: Sonny Stitt/Don Patterson, Vol. 2 album for sale The Natural Soul finds Lou Donaldson delving deeply into soul-jazz, recording a set of funky, greasy instrumentals with only a few references to hard bop. Donaldson occasionally sounds a little awkward with the relaxed groove of The Natural Soul, as does trumpeter Tommy Turrentine, but the trio of guitarist Grant Green, organist John Patton, and drummer Ben Dixon keep things cooking. Green and Patton's solos often burn and are always invigorating, and Lou frequently matches their heights. The original compositions -- which form the bulk of the album -- aren't much more than blues and soul vamps, but they provide an excellent foundation for the combo to work hot grooves. And, in the end, that's what The Natural Soul is about -- groove. It maintains the high standards Donaldson established with his first soul-jazz foray, Here 'Tis, and remains one of his best records in that genre. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Bill Evans You Must Believe in Spring CD (1977)
Legends of Acid Jazz: Sonny Stitt/Don Patterson, Vol. 2 songs Pianist Bill Evans's first album for Warner Brothers (after more than five years with Fantasy Records) features a title track by Michel Legrand, a French musician and songwriter who influenced Evans with his use of strong melody and sentiment. Evans turns both to his advantage on YOU MUST BELIEVE IN SPRING, managing as usual to avoid all but the merest hint of sentimentality. Evans's original songs, "We Will Meet Again," and "B Minor Waltz," are both subtly influenced by Legrand's ease with melody, and on both tracks Evans comes close to perfecting his ability to connect instantly with his listener. Included as well is an unusually sedate version of a perennial Evans favorite, the theme from M*A*S*H, which he often included in live performances. This final recording with long-time collaborator, bassist Eddie Gomez, was released in 1981, a year after Evans's death.

Dizzy Gillespie / Oscar Peterson Big 4 / Oscar Peterson Trumpet Summit Meets the Oscar Peterson Big Four CD (1980)
Legends of Acid Jazz: Sonny Stitt/Don Patterson, Vol. 2 CD music Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1990, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
To call this CD (a reissue of a Pablo date) an all-star session would be an understatement. Joining pianist Oscar Peterson, guitarist Joe Pass, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Bobby Durham are three classic trumpeters: Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, and Freddie Hubbard. They clearly inspire each other (Gillespie flew in from the East Coast specifically for this date) and the music ("Daahoud," "Just Friends," the new blues "Chicken Wings," and a torrid version of "The Champ") has plenty of exciting moments. Other performances from the same date can be heard on The Alternate Blues, another LP reissued on CD through the Original Jazz Classics imprint. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded at Group IV Studios, Hollywood, California on March 10, 1980. Originally released on Pablo (2312-114). Includes liner notes by Norman Granz.
Full performer name: Dizzy Gillespie/Freddie Hubbard/Clark Terry/Oscar Peterson.
Personnel: Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Clark Terry (trumpet); Oscar Peterson (piano); Joe Pass (guitar); Ray Brown (bass); Bobby Durham (drums).

Brothers-4 CD (1969)
Legends of Acid Jazz: Sonny Stitt/Don Patterson, Vol. 2 songs In September 1969, regular collaborators saxophonist Sonny Stitt and organist Don Patterson recorded together for the last time. For the occasion, they were joined by guitarist Grant Green, forming something of an organ combo supergroup. Patterson's excellent regular drummer Billy James rounded out the quartet. The ten tracks they made together -- four of them found on the original LP, six others added to later editions -- were not the crowning achievement for any of the principals, but they still stand in the front ranks of organ jazz. Three of the LP's tracks clock in at over eight minutes, providing lots of room for stretching out. Patterson's title track -- a classic, driving soul-jazz theme -- is the highlight. James' "Creepin' Home" moves along at a slacker, shuffling pace. Irving Berlin's "Alexander's Ragtime Band" surprisingly becomes a vehicle for impressive solos from the three lead players, once they get through stating the corny melody. The Burt Bacharach/Hal David pop ballad "Walk on By" also features good work from the quartet. [The six tunes not heard on the original LP eventually appeared on the Patterson LPs Donny Brook and Tune Up, then were rounded up here.] ~ Jim Todd

Sonny Stitt Low Flame CD (1962)
Legends of Acid Jazz: Sonny Stitt/Don Patterson, Vol. 2 album for sale Stitt plays both tenor and alto sax on this set, backed by his working band of the time: Don Patterson on organ, Billy James on drums, and Paul Weeden on guitar. This small combo jazz fits between Bebop and soul-jazz, dominated by group-penned material. Stitt gets an especially smoky tone on the ballads, particularly on the title track, which is a sultry blues number also featuring the guitarist and organ in their solo turns. Weeden distinguishes himself more as a soloist than Patterson does, particularly on the Wes Montgomery-type lines on "Silly Billy." Prestige's 1999 CD reissue of the album combines Low Flame and the entirety of Stitt's 1964 album Shangri-La (which also features Patterson and James, though not Weeden) on the same disc. ~ Richie Unterberger
