| | Johnnie Taylor Lifetime: A Retrospective Of Soul, Blues & Gospel 1956-99 CD Johnnie Taylor Discography of CDs
(6 Customer Reviews)
Recorded between 1956 and 1999. Includes liner notes by Lee Hildebrand, Don Davis, Wolf Stephenson and Al Bell.
Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
From his days singing gospel for the Highway Q.C.'s and as Sam Cooke's replacement in the Soul Stirrers, to his bluesy 1996 regional hit "Last Two Dollars," Johnnie Taylor covered an amazing breadth of musical ground. The 3-CD box set LIFETIME presents all sides of Taylor: spiritual singer, blues wailer, and soul superstar. Included are early cuts with the aforementioned Highway Q.C.'s ("I Dreamed That Heaven Was Like This") and the Soul Stirrers ("Out on a Hill," "Until Then"), along with Taylor's first forays into secular music, including his initial recordings for Stax (Merle Travis' "Sixteen Tons," Sam and Dave's "You Don't Know Like I Know"), and his short-lived stint on Cooke's SAR label ("Rome Wasn't Built in a Day").
Also included are the Arkansas native's greatest Stax successes, notably "I Believe in You (You Believe in Me)," and "Who's Making Love." Taylor's '70s material is drawn from his time with Columbia and features his biggest hit, the chart-topping "Disco Lady," which also became the first platinum-certified single. By the mid-'80s Taylor was recording for Southern soul label Malaco, represented here by tracks including the prophetic "Soul Heaven," recorded a few months before his death.

| Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews disc 1 is the best this box set is the best of the gospel that people have the trouble finding now you can get all three levels of johnnie, that great Submitted by a reviewer (plainfield,nj, usa ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
2 out of 3 OK, here is my assessment: Disc One is Gospel, mostly, from Taylor's early career...It is OK, but You and I bought the CD"s for His Soul/R&B/Blues output, didn't we? So, with that in mind, here's what I did (and reccomend)...Buy the Box set, but toss disc One...If You pay $38 or less, it's worth it, You are getting two stellar discs (2 and 3), with every important Taylor track, covering 35 years, from the sublime "little Bluebird" to "last two Dollars" and every great Cut in between. Or, You can wait for a Single-disc 78 minute Best-of, but I doubt it would have ALL the neccessary songs, because Taylor recorded on several Labels....and to My ears, the 20 track Stax best of that's available has subpar sound, and no "disco Lady", et al....So, get this, and keep disc one, if You like, or go on with discs 2 and 3, and You'll have some essential SOUL!!! By the way, the 4 stars is for All 3 discs combined, discs 2 and 3 alone rate 5 stars Submitted by a reviewer (Dallas) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Johnny Taylor Is A Houston Texas Icon I am Johnny Taylors biggest fan, Im a rap artist from Houston, TX. and we in Texas love J.T. as we call him. He has been a great influence in so many relationships of fans that he never new he touched. With the beautifully invented and mastered perfection of songs like "I Believe", "Disco Lady" and "Last 2 Dollars" some of my many many personal favorites. This man was a perfectionist and a dedicated professional musician, which is what the industry is really lacking now a days! When Is the Movie about Johnny Taylor coming to the big screen? May he rest in peace. Ice Ike the Son of Isiah Submitted by iceikeq (Houston, TX.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Strictly Wonderful This boxset has a lot of stuff that I have never heard--and when I did hear it, it was like falling in love with Johnnie all over again and most of all hating the fact that he is dead. I think that all three CD's are wonderful. I do agree that some of the Malaco hits should have been on there, but I can still deal with this. I think that I made a great investment and if you can find it; it would be a great investment for you too... Missing you Johnnie... Submitted by a reviewer (Florida) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
