Liner Note Author: Lee Hildebrand. Arranger: Rene Hall. Taylor gets honored with a three-CD box set for this career retrospective. And it truly is a career retrospective: it spans 1956-1999 and includes a good deal of material that he did for other labels before and after his lengthy Stax stint. It's true that you have to be a pretty deep Taylor fan to commit to nearly four hours of his music. It's also true that even if you are a big Taylor fan, you're likely to need some patience to last through some of the average cuts, or his stylistic transition from gospel to soul to disco and retro-soul. Overall, however, it's a fine commemoration of an important if not quite great soul star. The most valuable components of the set are found on disc one, which kicks off with a half-dozen gospel tunes from his stints with the Highway Q.C.'s and the Soul Stirrers in the late '50s, moving into some of his soul sides for Sam Cooke's SAR label in the early '60s. For the remainder of disc one and some of disc two, there are plenty of fine soul-blues cuts from his early days at Stax in the mid-to-late '60s that will be familiar to relatively few listeners, his fine soul-blues-gospel vocal blend resulting in some of his finest work. As time wore on -- even starting in the early '70s -- Taylor's material got duller and more homogenized, though there were always some highlights to perk up your ears. Unsurprisingly, then, like most box sets, this gets less interesting the closer it draws to the finish line, although wisely his late-'70s Columbia era (yes, "Disco Lady" is here) and post-'70s Malaco output is represented by a mere four cuts each. Ultimately, it's a well-doMojo (Publisher) (2/01, p.89) - "...The Philosopher of Soul...The finest of his songs...tell woebegone tales from the hypotenuse of the triangle of love, the emotional geometry in which Taylor specialized....He [has] a powerful feeling ..." 2 out of 3 OK, here is my assessment: Disc One is Gospel, mostly, from Taylor's early career...It is OK, but You and I bought the CD"s for His Soul/R&B/Blues output, didn't we? So, with that in mind, here's what I did (and reccomend)...Buy the Box set, but toss disc One...If You pay $38 or less, it's worth it, You are getting two stellar discs (2 and 3), with every important Taylor track, covering 35 years, from the sublime "little Bluebird" to "last two Dollars" and every great Cut in between. Or, You can wait for a Single-disc 78 minute Best-of, but I doubt it would have ALL the neccessary songs, because Taylor recorded on several Labels....and to My ears, the 20 track Stax best of that's available has subpar sound, and no "disco Lady", et al....So, get this, and keep disc one, if You like, or go on with discs 2 and 3, and You'll have some essential SOUL!!! By the way, the 4 stars is for All 3 discs combined, discs 2 and 3 alone rate 5 stars Submitted by a reviewer (Dallas) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Johnny Taylor Is A Houston Texas Icon I am Johnny Taylors biggest fan, Im a rap artist from Houston, TX. and we in Texas love J.T. as we call him. He has been a great influence in so many relationships of fans that he never new he touched. With the beautifully invented and mastered perfection of songs like "I Believe", "Disco Lady" and "Last 2 Dollars" some of my many many personal favorites. This man was a perfectionist and a dedicated professional musician, which is what the industry is really lacking now a days! When Is the Movie about Johnny Taylor coming to the big screen? May he rest in peace. Ice Ike the Son of Isiah Submitted by iceikeq (Houston, TX.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Strictly Wonderful This boxset has a lot of stuff that I have never heard--and when I did hear it, it was like falling in love with Johnnie all over again and most of all hating the fact that he is dead. I think that all three CD's are wonderful. I do agree that some of the Malaco hits should have been on there, but I can still deal with this. I think that I made a great investment and if you can find it; it would be a great investment for you too... Missing you Johnnie... Submitted by a reviewer (Florida) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
