While this is not nearly as essential as some other Stax wax, it has a loose, raffish appeal and never falls into the murk of a boring super-session chopsfest. These guys were simply havin' fun with some standard soul/R&B covers (e.g. "What'd I Say," "Baby What You Want Me To Do") and some wide-open originals, kickin' back with some serious riffin'. Cropper proffers his usual intense, simplistic soloing, while King swoops and dives in a stringbending fury. The added plus is the silky smooth near-falsetto of Pop Staples, whose vocal on "Tupelo" is suitably eerie... ~ John Dougan, Option 20_88

Steve Cropper / Albert King / Pop Staples Jammed Together Songs Jammed Together Music Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) Good Stuff! A little off beat and different, both good things in my opinion. Some good playing and some so so playing. But putting it all together makes it work as a whole. Very listenable, even toe tapping fun at times. Reminds me a little of Booker T and the MGs at times. Albert explores lots of tones as does Cropper, he gets out of his mold a little here. Stax's Best Axe Slingers Team Up This is a fine release, spotlighting three of Stax's best guitarists: Steve Cropper of Booker T & The MG's, bluesman Albert King, and Roebuck "Pops" Staples, patriarch of the Staple Singers. It's a mostly instrumental album, although each artist takes a vocal: King kicks things off with a supercharged "What'd I Say", Pops follows with John Lee Hooker's "Tupelo", and Cropper does his own "Water". Instrumental highlights are "Opus De Soul", and "Homer's Theme". This is also available as a remastered import from CD Universe (Stax SCD24 8544-2). Type "Cropper/Staples/King" into the "Artist Search" box and you're there. Look for the words "remastered" and "Diga-Pak". For info on another great Albert King pairing, send me an e-mail. REALLY DISAPPOINTED I LOVE ALBERT KING AND HE IS THE ONLY BRIGHT SPOT ON THIS RECORDING. EVEN THEN, HE GETS INTO SOME KIND OF LATE 60'S BLUES/JAZZ THING THAT SOUNDS LIKE A BAD SOUNDTRACK. Submitted by cbfaughn (Jacksonville, FL USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 17 found this helpful.
