During the mid- to late '80s, talent scout and Shrapnel Records owner Mike Varney was the ultimate source for new high-tech guitar virtuosos in the post-Yngwie Malmsteen era (Malmsteen was also one of his finds). Among the dozens of young guns who emerged from Varney's stable, Greg Howe was one of the best. His debut album, Greg Howe, was groove-based, and favored funk and fusion flavors over gothic neo-classicism. It sounded fresh compared to the melodramatic work of peers like, say, Vinnie Moore. Front-loaded with two devastating tracks, "Kick It All Over" and "The Pepper Shake," Greg Howe is immediately engaging. Unlike other music in the note-heavy "shred" genre, these two pieces sound fun rather than academic; the irresistibly slippery grooves provided by the crack rhythm section of Atma Anur (drums) and Billy Sheehan (bass) provide a supple bed for Howe's playful fretwork. Unfortunately, the rest of the album falls off a bit after that. The remaining tracks have some interesting ideas and plenty of enthusiastic performances, but sound more like vamps for Howe's soloing than songs. A few premonitions of Howe's more fusion-based future reveal themselves on Greg Howe, although it's primarily a high-octane, indulgent rock romp. Worth hearing. ~ Andy Hinds Greg Howe Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Best Shred!!!!!!!!!!! This stuff is the best shred in the world. move over vinnie moore! this album was a breath of fresh air when it was first released in 1988. those of us used to guitar virtuosity in a metal genre, had thought that the likes of vinnie moore, yngwie malmstein and others were the wave of the future. along comes greg howe to blow the lid off of the guitar playing world, with his unique style, and flare. and he has only gotten better as the years have passed. each disc he has produced ( including collaborations with ritchie kotzen), have progressed and showcased his unique talents. i suggest anyone who is a lover of instrumental or jazz, or even metal music, for that matter, give it a listen. you won't be disappointed. GREAT In 1987 Greg Howe was the jazz-metal shredder's first record for Shrapnel Records, that had never recorded anyone comparable to the Pennsylvania native. This potent release combines bluesy elements with Howe’s own incredible state-of-the-art technique. Laden with adventurous rhythm tracks from poll-winning bassist Billy Sheehan and progressive drummer Atma Anur, Greg Howe has become a mainstay of guitar fans everywhere. Howe is an extremely talented guitarist who plays blindingly fast on top-notch tracks such as "Bad Racket" and "Straight Up." Submitted by rkcarp (Chester, VA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Adverts Punk Singles Collection CD (1999) (Import) United Kingdom
Greg Howe
$15.65 Seven singles and 14 tracks, and one of the most lopsided reputations in British punk is finally placed on an even keel. Popular wisdom, after all, insists that the Adverts started life at the top of the pile -- U.K. music press single of the week awards for the first three singles, Top 40 placings for their second and fourth -- and then slid to the pits from there. In fact, the only downside of the Adverts' singles is that there weren't any more of them. Nine months separated the fourth, "No Time to Be 21," from the fifth, "Television's Over," and another six months yawned between that and "My Place." At a time when other bands were pumping out 45s like they were going out of fashion, the Adverts -- well, that's a story for the liner notes to tell. Suffice to say, having raced hell-for-leather for the first year of their existence, the band's absence thereafter was more than perturbing. The inspired pairing of "One Chord Wonders" and "Quickstep," the triumphal chiming of intent and irony that debuted the band on the Stiff label in spring 1977, opens the collection. The A-side was, of course, to prove horrifically self-fulfilling, as the Adverts' critics pounced upon its apparent declaration of musical ...

| | Glenn Kotche Mobile CD (2006)
Greg Howe
$13.89 Personnel: Glenn Kotche (percussion). Audio Mixer: Glenn Kotche. Recording information: Semaphore, Chicago, IL (2005); Soma E.M.S., Chicago, IL (2005); The Loft, Chicago, IL (2005). Photographer: Michael "Mick" Wilson. Glenn Kotche's major-label debut, MOBILE, is a tour de force of percussive exploration. Kotche's imaginative journey begins with "Clapping Music Variations," his tribute to serial music composer Steve Reich, which uses Reich's original "Clapping Music" as a foundation for the drummer's own percussive improvisations, while "Monkey Chant" takes as its inspiration vintage recordings of Balinese singers, which Kotche interprets with different rhythmic and tonal voices. About as far away from a conventional drummer's solo album as it's possible to get, MOBILE is a coherently assembled and thought-provoking experience. Mobile, percussionist Glenn Kotche's third solo offering, is his first for Nonesuch. Being a member of Wilco made scoring a record deal with his band's prestigious label a bit easier to come by, perhaps, but it's well-deserved nonetheless. Kotche has played on over 70 recordings and performed in a variety settings over the past decade. He's a member of Loose Fur with Wilco bandmate Jeff Tweedy and Jim O'Rourke, and half of On Fillmore with bassist Darin Gray. Mobile showcases him playing solo on different percussion instruments including vibraphone, marimba, cembalo, piano, mbira, kit drums, and more. Rock (and Wilco) fans may blanch at the thought of someone making a solo percussion record, but that's their problem. Mobile is a fascinating and challenging recording of composed strategy pieces by a master musician. The only work not entirely composed by Kotche here is the opener, "Clapping Music Variations," based on "Clapping Music" by Steve Reich from 1972. While using the theme of the original as his first couple of phrases, he identifies his source and its character. But where that music goes is someplace altogether different. Pitches, modes, meter; all are implemented and built upon in layers with various percussion instruments including cymbals, vibes, marimbas, and tom toms. Each occupies a certain place in the work, while the pulse is static. The title track is in three parts based on three interlocking kalimba melodies, written during the Ghost Is Born sessions. Kalimba is only ...
