Hats Off! A Tribute To Merle Haggard album
$12.69 Bringing Willie Nelson and Western Swing revivalists Asleep at the Wheel together for an album of Western Swing classics was a dream project for legendary producer Jerry Wexler, who had wanted to do it back in the 1970s, when Willie was still with Atlantic. (It wound up being one of the last recordings he worked on before his death in 2008.) Better late than never, Nelson and the band finally teamed up for WILLIE AND THE WHEEL.
The Wheel had recently backed Willie up on tour, so they knew just how to make their sound work for the singer, and sure enough, Nelson's vocals fit the band's tight-but-swinging sound like the proverbial glove. Tackling tunes made famous by Bob Wills and others, they keep it traditional, staying within the stylistic template established some six decades earlier, but still stamping the project with ...

Hats Off! A Tribute To Merle Haggard songs
$14.39 Steeleye Span's debut album, 1970's HARK! THE VILLAGE WAIT--a "wait" being a medieval village band--is a landmark of British folk-rock, a folk supergroup equivalent to the legendary Masked Marauders. Ashley Hutchings formed Steeleye Span after he left Fairport Convention, following disagreements with Sandy Denny over the latter band's direction, Martin Carthy naming it in homage to an obscure folk tune called "Horkstow Grange." This lineup also includes ...
| | Guy Clark Cold Dog Soup CD (1999)
Hats Off! A Tribute To Merle Haggard album
$15.05 When the roster of great Texas songwriters is called, the two names that usually tumble out first are Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. These two compatriots shared a gift for combining the simple and the poetic in an unassuming but endlessly memorable country/folk style. With Van Zandt's passing, Clark was left to shoulder the burden of Lone Star poet laureate alone (he's based out of Nashville these days, but you can't take Texas out of the boy). COLD DOG SOUP registers the presence of Van Zandt nevertheless; the opening song mentions him by name, and is followed by Steve Earle's Townes memorial "Ft. Worth Blues."
Nevertheless, Clark has always been fully his own man, and his unique vision is fully intact throughout the album. The songs are presented in a pared-down acoustic format, with Clark mostly accompanied only by Darrell Scott (mandolin) and Verlon Thompson (guitar). This allows the uncluttered, deceptively simple imagery of Clark's songs room to breathe. His weathered, gritty voice sounds full of wisdom as it delivers ...

Though the band goes to every possible length to obscure it, full disclosure demands mentioning the fact that 30 SECONDS TO MARS is led by actor Jared Leto, known for such films as PANIC ROOM and REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, and twice named one of People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People." That said, charges of dilettantism would seem entirely out of order here, as all four members of the group ...

Hats Off! A Tribute To Merle Haggard music CDs
$12.29 MIDNIGHT AT THE MOVIES being Justin Townes Earle's second album, it's still early enough in his career that it's hard to talk about him without mentioning his father, Steve Earle. But for the sake of the obligatory comparison, the younger Earle's second release makes the differences between him and his father all the more apparent. Justin's actually more of an Americana traditionalist; he offers a faithful rendition of folk song "They Killed John Henry," shows off his acoustic fingerpicking skills on "Dirty Rag," and generally ...
