| | Rocky Top & Other Bluegrass Classics CD (1 Customer Review)
These songs are certainly all bluegrass classics, and in a few cases ("Rocky Top," the Osborne Brothers standard, and Don Reno's banjo showcase "Skyline Drive") they're actually performed by the artists normally associated with them. But bluegrass aficionados will note with some discomfort the presence of drums and pedal steel on many of these tracks, as well as an echo-drenched production style on almost all of them that makes even the most straightahead performances (such as Benny Martin's take on "Foggy Mountain Breakdown") sound slick in a way that's downright weird. The drums fit in just fine with Merle Travis and Joe Maphis's rendition of "Lonesome Road Blues," but that's because Merle Travis is more of a country blues than a bluegrass player. Too bad his acoustic guitar sound is so distorted-someone neglected to check the microphone levels in the studio, apparently. Mac Wiseman joins the Osborne Brothers for nice versions of "I Wonder How the Old Folks Are at Home" and "Mountain Fever," and Grandpa Jones does a great job on "Tragic Romance." With tasteful production and less percussion, this collection could have been a winner. ~ Rick Anderson

Rocky Top & Other Bluegrass Classics album
$12.39 Lady Antebellum prefaced the release of Need You Now by issuing its title track as a single; it reached the top spot on the country charts and stayed there for five straight weeks. It was their second number one, and they wasted no time following it with "American Honey," a mere two months before this set was in stores. This singing and songwriting trio -- lead vocalists Charles Kelly, and Hillary Scott with multi-instrumentalist and backing vocalist Dave Haywood -- understand how Nashville works, and how to work it. On their sophomore effort, they stick very close to the formula of their debut: a slew of mid- and uptempo love songs, a sad ballad, and a couple of rocked-up good-time tunes -- all self-written with some help from some of Nashville's most respected writers. Kelly's baritone is emotive, expressive, and deep in the pocket, no matter what he's singing. He shines on the soft rocking "Love ...

Rocky Top & Other Bluegrass Classics CD music
$15.14 This double-disc compilation of George Jones' singles has a bit of a misnomer attached as a title: none of these tracks were actually "lost." These recordings were cut for Pappy Daily's Musicor label and were the subject of a legal dispute for a number of years that was only settled in the early years of the 21st century. Recordings for Starday (another Daily label), United Artists, Mercury, and Epic have ben released, but these remained back in the vault after the LPs and cassettes they were originally released on went out of print. The material here is simple, much more sparse and direct than the ...

Rocky Top & Other Bluegrass Classics music CDs
$33.79 Recorded in Los Angeles, California; Nashville and Mt. Juliet, Tennessee between February 1960 and December 1987. Includes liner notes by Jimmy Guterman.
The definitive Loretta Lynn career retrospective, and liable to remain so. All the hits are here, plus rarities and overlooked tracks, and the three CDs are sequenced more or less chronologically, from her self-promoted 1960 breakthrough "Honky Tonk Girl" (recorded, in mono, under somewhat primitive conditions) to 1987's "Who Was That Stranger" (state-of-the-art digital), with Lynn's undiminished vocal powers supplying the continuity. Besides the signature ...
