All songs are traditional Haudenosaunee-Iroquois chants and melodies put to music by Peter Kater.
After their moving collaboration on a TV documentary, vocalist Joanne Shenandoah and pianist/composer Peter Kater were moved to record a whole album of traditional Iroquois songs. These nine ancient songs are similar in melody and lyrics; the melodic line is long and sweet like a lullaby while the language flies light with elongated vowel sounds. For the most part, Kater surrounds the songs airily, with light organ chords that touch extended vistas. Only "Woman's Dance" is jazzed up. His piano adds sweet, melodic touches. "Dance of the North," with its eddies of wind, is spellbinding, like mighty clouds skimming gracefully across mountain ranges; according to Shenandoah, this song is a "thunder dance" and mourning song. Kazu Matsui on shakuhachi flute brings a ghostly Zen element to the beginning of title track, but a beat builds and the song races in joyous prayer to the blood of life, water. The sleeve bills the album as "a bliss-ride thru the ancient, the modern, the electric, and the Vedic," and for once the hype isn't overstated. You name it -- it's here, from Western alternative rock to electronica, Indian neo-classical, worldbeats of different types, chants, even ambient music. And the thing is, it all fits together seamlessly. While the music is meant to be spiritual, to the average listener it's a fascinating journey, as the pieces -- the shortest runs seven and a half minutes, the longest almost 13 minutes -- unfold, morph, and take on different shapes and colors; for anyone expecting a lightweight new age disc, it's really quite a shock. Drummer and percussionist Jesse (formerly a member of Dramarama) has assembled a fascinating band comprised of American and Indian musicians who work beautifully together under his direction, and his sense of arrangement is inspired throughout. The Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is a rather fascinating trio. Reed Mathis is the main wild card, for he plays acoustic bass, octave pedal-induced bass (which sometimes sounds like a guitar), cello, 12-string guitar and sitar. Mathis is often in the lead (particularly when playing in the upper register), pianist Brian Haas is quite unpredictable (almost swinging in spots and then indulging in sound explorations), and drummer-percussionist Jason Smart is very alert to the other two musicians' spontaneous ideas. The music is avant-garde, but also crosses over into fusion and post-bop. There are times when one wishes the group would break into a groove but the episodic music does not find them settling into any one basic idea for long. In addition to the 13 selections on this CD (all originals), this set also comes with a four-song DVD ("Pacific"/"Walking With Giants"/"Slow Breath Silent Mind"/"There Is No Method"), music that was freely improvised on March 30 and 31, 2004 before an audience at Yoshi's in Oakland. The addition of the DVD makes this set a particularly good buy for listeners curious as to what the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is about. ~ Scott Yanow

Straightfork is a four piece rock machine from Houston Texas that is all about pure rock and roll. Straightfork was formed in October of 2004 and since then the quartet has been steadily growing and progressing in the Houston rock scene and throughout Texas in general. Straightfork strives to put out a hard driving classic/southern rock sound that seems to be missing in much of today’s music. With so many influences behind them such as AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Guns N’ Roses and ZZ Top, it’s hard to place this fresh new act into one genre of rock.
