Joanne Shenandoah album
$14.65 All songs are traditional Haudenosaunee-Iroquois chants and melodies put to music by Peter Kater.
After their moving collaboration on a TV documentary, vocalist Joanne Shenandoah and pianist/composer Peter Kater were moved to record a whole album of traditional Iroquois songs. These nine ancient songs are similar in melody and lyrics; the melodic line is long and sweet like a lullaby while the language flies light with elongated vowel sounds. For the most part, Kater surrounds the songs airily, with light organ chords that touch extended vistas. Only "Woman's ...

| | Winter's Solstice: Silver Anniversary Edition CD (2001) Silver Anniversary Edt
Joanne Shenandoah music CDs
$6.15 This is part of Windham Hill Records "A Winter Solstice" series.
One of the most well known productions of the Windham Hill label, which basically invented new age music but prefers the term "contemporary instrumental," has been the WINTER'S SOLSTICE series. Perhaps inspired by the season-based recordings of George Winston, the SOLSTICE albums (which feature tunes from a variety of the label's artists) have always been not Christmas albums per se, but winter albums. Of course, a few Yuletide-oriented tunes do find their way onto this, the anniversary edition of the first volume in the series, but for the most part these are agreeable sonic meditations on a wintry state of mind by the likes of Barbara Higbie, ...

| | Windham Hill Christmas II CD (2003)
Joanne Shenandoah CD music
$6.09 Following in the footsteps of the previous collection, A Windham Hill Christmas, Vol. 2 gathers more relaxing, sophisticated holiday music as performed by Windham Hill's roster of artists. The collection finds the right balance between traditional and contemporary, both in terms of its sound and its choice of songs. Will Ackerman and David Cullen's "I Wonder as I Wander" sounds gently modern, while Paul McCandless' "In Dulci Jubilo" has a slightly more traditional bent. Tracy Silverman and Thea Suits' strings and flute interpretation of "Away in a Manger" mixes both approaches and is breathtaking in its ...

| | Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey Walking With Giants CD (2004) Bonus DVD
Joanne Shenandoah CD music
$12.89 The Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is a rather fascinating trio. Reed Mathis is the main wild card, for he plays acoustic bass, octave pedal-induced bass (which sometimes sounds like a guitar), cello, 12-string guitar and sitar. Mathis is often in the lead (particularly when playing in the upper register), pianist Brian Haas is quite unpredictable (almost swinging in spots and then indulging in sound explorations), and drummer-percussionist Jason Smart is very alert to the other two musicians' spontaneous ideas. The music is avant-garde, but also crosses over into fusion and post-bop. There are times when one wishes the group would break into a groove but the episodic music does not find them settling into any one basic idea for long. In addition to the 13 selections on this CD (all originals), this set also comes with a four-song DVD ("Pacific"/"Walking With Giants"/"Slow Breath Silent Mind"/"There Is No Method"), music that was freely improvised on March 30 and 31, 2004 before an audience at Yoshi's in Oakland. The addition of the DVD makes this set a particularly good buy for listeners curious as to what the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is about. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Straightfork-EP CD (2008)
Joanne Shenandoah songs
$7.35 Straightfork is a four piece rock machine from Houston Texas that is all about pure rock and roll. Straightfork was formed in October of 2004 and since then the quartet has been steadily growing and progressing in the Houston rock scene and throughout Texas in general. Straightfork strives to put out a hard driving classic/southern rock sound that seems to be missing in much of today’s music. With so many influences behind them such as AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Guns N’ Roses and ZZ Top, it’s hard to place this fresh new act into one genre of rock. They like to refer to it as real rock and roll with a Texas attitude. Many are curious about the name, which the band adopted from a street sign in one of their local neighborhoods. ...
