| | BBC Scottish So Romantic Violin Concerto Vol 2 - Stanford / Marwood CD (2000)
Massenet: Orchestral Suites 4-7 / Ossonce, New Zealand So
$14.29 The music of Charles Villiers Stanford is probably most familiar to listeners who are aquatinted with the many sacred choral works that he wrote for the Anglican church. The Irish-born Stanford was one of the most revered musical figures in Edwardian England and was the influential teacher of Vaughan Williams, Howells, and Holst. Stanford was also a violinist and this recording, part of Hyperion's "Romantic Violin Concerto" series, features two of Stanford's large-scale works for violin and orchestra.
The Suite Op. 32 is a five-movement work that pays tribute to the music of the baroque era. Each of the five movements makes great demands on the violin soloist, especially the Bach-flavored "Ouverture." Violin soloist Anthony Marwood is up to the challenges presented by this obscure but engaging work, playing the silky legato lines with lyricism. The Concerto in D Major is a massive work that bears Brahms' influence, particularly in the orchestral accompaniment. Once again Marwood proves that he's a skilful soloist, weaving rich melodic lines in the lovely second movement. The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra provides him with energetic accompaniment and makes this a real treat for all lovers of grand violin concertos.

| | A Kreda Piazzolla: La Muerte Del Angel, Etc / Sawicki, Kreda, Et Al CD (1999)
Massenet: Orchestral Suites 4-7 / Ossonce, New Zealand So
$15.15 Argentineans are rightfully proud of their musical heritage. The tango spread across the globe as a dance sensation and has a staying power like few others before or since. Astor Piazzolla is one of the modern masters responsible for the international popularity of this sensuous dance. Although his compositions reveal a sophisticated understanding of counterpoint and harmony, the tango is a celebration of more non-intellectual human pursuits. Emotional and erotic, Piazzolla's compositions tell stories of sadness and sensuality, isolation and love. "La Muerte del Angel," part of a suite of seven pieces composed in the early 1960s, is an achingly beautiful ode to a dying angel. "Melodˇa" is one of Piazzolla's last pieces--the composer died before giving it a name.
This disc also includes pieces by Bernardo Stalman, also a native Argentinean. A founding member of the country's National Symphony Orchestra, he creates innovative tango scores with unique string arrangements. Conductor Roberto Sawicki and pianist Adrián Kreda are also both born Argentineans raised with the tradition of tango. They bring their blood to this recording, giving performances full of soul and spirit.

| | Alex Masi In The Name Of Beethoven CD (2005) (Import) Sweden
Massenet: Orchestral Suites 4-7 / Ossonce, New Zealand So
$18.55 This is the third album in Alex Masi's trilogy of albums inspired by classic music, following "In The Name Of Bach" and "In The Name Of Mozart."
In The Name Of Beethoven is the third and final instalment of Alex Masi's series of classically inspired music that started off with the very successful "In The Name Of Bach", which was followed by "In The Name Of Mozart". Forget enjoying Beethoven's pieces only on violin or keyboard, this CD is all guitar. This time Alex has taken on the challenge of performing the music of Ludwig Van Beethoven on a Manne Semiacustica Guitar and a Manne Taos Electric Guitar. On the Romance For Violin No. 2 (track 3), Masi is joined by the Karlsbad String Academy (conducted by Anton Janecek) and is the one track featuring a heavy electric guitar sound. The result once again: another remarkable, must-have guitar album unlike anything else out there. No drums or percussion -- In The Name Of Beethoven is Masi's all guitar tribute to these masterworks. Instrumental Guitar (Acoustic/Classical), total running time, 42:12
