Veteran blues guitarist Barry Levenson wrote all 11 selections for Hard Times Won, which co-stars Johnny Dyer on vocals and harmonica. The music ranges from lowdown Chicago blues to swinging jazz/blues with Mike Thompson's organ giving a soul-jazz feel to some of the instrumentals. Levenson's lyrics are intelligent, there is a surprising amount of variety on the songs even though they do stick to blues, and the musicianship is excellent. Levenson and Dyer in particular make for a great team, and the results are often exciting and are always quite spirited. This highly enjoyable set should appeal to both blues and jazz fans. ~ Scott Yanow

This is the third album in Alex Masi's trilogy of albums inspired by classic music, following "In The Name Of Bach" and "In The Name Of Mozart."
In The Name Of Beethoven is the third and final instalment of Alex Masi's series of classically inspired music that started off with the very successful "In The Name Of Bach", which was followed by "In The Name Of Mozart". Forget enjoying Beethoven's pieces only on violin or keyboard, this CD is all guitar. This time Alex has taken on the challenge of performing the music of Ludwig Van Beethoven on a Manne Semiacustica Guitar and a Manne Taos Electric Guitar. On the Romance For Violin No. 2 (track 3), Masi is joined by the Karlsbad String Academy (conducted by Anton Janecek) and is the one track featuring a heavy electric guitar sound. The result once again: another remarkable, must-have guitar album unlike anything else out there. No drums or percussion -- In The Name Of Beethoven is Masi's all guitar tribute to these masterworks.
