| | Count Basie At Newport CD (1957) Bonus Tracks; Reissue; Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Kabalevsky: Romeo & Juliet, Colas Breugnon, Etc / Jelvakov
$12.35 Originally released on Verve (6024). Includes liner notes by Richard Sudhalter.
By the time of this 1957 recording, the Basie band was enjoying something of a renaissance, and the appreciation of the audience for this legendary musician helps make this live recording all the warmer. This was a special night for the band, as it represented a coming together of the contemporary Basie assemblage with some of the original Kansas City veterans. Entrepeneur John Hammond, who helped bring Basie to national attention in the '30s, warmly introduces the band one by one, stressing the importance of each member.
Thad Jones, Frank Foster and company lay down a solid version of "Swingin' At Newport," after which they are joined by one after another of Basie's old Kansas City cohorts. From Lester Young to Jimmy Rushing, the stage soon becomes flooded with KC royalty, as old meets new with glorious results. Clearly, this evening at Newport was a night to remember, and we're fortunate it was captured for posterity.
Digipak. W/ 5 Bonus Tracks.
Recorded at Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, Rhode Island on July 7, 1957.

| | Peggy Lee Black Coffee CD (1953) Remastered; Digipak
Kabalevsky: Romeo & Juliet, Colas Breugnon, Etc / Jelvakov
$15.25 All tracks have been digitally mastered using 24-bit technology.
Peggy Lee's BLACK COFFEE is a consummate jazz vocal album. Here, Lee's singing generates many emotions at once. For example, few vocalists can convey such vulnerability and strength at the same time. However, Lee's approach never comes across as forced or strained. And it is certainly not complex; her tone resounds with purity and cool passion with every phrase. The musical accompaniment is also outstanding. The elegant piano stylings of Jimmy Rowles, or, alternately, Lou Levy bring great refinement to the proceedings. In contrast, the bluesy musings of trumpeter Pete Candoli infuse this album with a kind of raw, smoky flavor.
"A Woman Alone with the Blues" is one of the most stunning tracks on BLACK COFFEE. A languid ballad about heartache, Lee exacts the pain that loneliness and loss can bring. "You're My Thrill" is another goose-bump track. On this tune, Lee sings with all the coyness of a wooing suitor. Overall, the sheer intimacy and bubbling intensity of this record will enwrap the listener.
Recording information: New York City, NY (1953); Los Angeles, CA (1956).
Personnel: Peggy Lee (vocals); Bill Pitman (guitar); Stella Castellucci (harp); Pete Candoli (trumpet); Jimmy Rowles, Lou Levy (piano); Larry Bunker (vibraphone, drums, percussion); Max Wayne, Buddy Clark (double bass); Ed Shaughnessy (drums).

Kabalevsky: Romeo & Juliet, Colas Breugnon, Etc / Jelvakov
$12.09 This disc was Gramophone's "Recording of the Month" for February 1999.
Maurice Ravel's piano concertos are works of unapologetic neoclassicism, in their use of traditional concerto forms with modern twists of harmonic and melodic gestures. The G-major concerto is the freer of the two, from its opening whip crack to its rollicking finale, with the sublime Adagio in the middle. Pierre Boulez leads the Cleveland Orchestra here, an ensemble with which he has been closely associated for many years, and one which knows his take on this repertoire well. Pianist Krystian Zimerman's pianism shines, with flawless technique and sensitivity to Ravel's melodies.
The more serious-sounding D-major concerto for the left hand--commissioned by Paul Wittgenstein--was to have been recorded in Cleveland, but Zimerman felt that the chosen piano didn't suit the acoustic of Cleveland's Masonic Hall, and the work was instead recorded later in London. Zimerman excels with the London Symphony Orchestra as he did with the Cleveland. Between the two concertos, Boulez and the Cleveland Orchestra provide a spirited reading of the 'Valses nobles et sentimentales,' further Ravelian neoclassic gems, inspired by Schubert. A fine outing from Boulez and Zimerman, and an altogether enjoyable disc.
