Originally issued in 1992 on the Amazon label and then reissued five years later under the larger Evidence cover, this is Austin, TX, native Carmen Bradford's first album under her own name. Endowed with a powerful, expressive, wide-ranged voice, Bradford seasons her jazz vocalizing with soul and blues as she delivers on a play list of familiar and not so familiar material embossed with a variety of tempi. There's "Destiny," done with a Latin rhythm at an up-tempo pace and featuring the guitar of Charlton Johnson (who also composed the tune). She dips into the Lionel Hampton songbook for one of his hardly ever heard tunes, "Chicago Hello," showing off her swinging aptitude, this time with Bill Easley and Steve Greenfield sharing the solo spotlight on tenor, making it one of the more engaging tracks on the CD. Memories of Motown are recalled with Ray Charles' "I Believe to My Soul," done with Aretha Franklin in mind. Bradford shows she is at home with pure romantic ballads on a very heartfelt "The Right to Love," with James Polk carrying the bulk of the accompanist load. In fact, "heartfelt" may be the one best word that characterizes what is going on at this session. Bradford throws everything she has into each tune, leaving no emotion untouched. Even the Ella Fitzgerald classic "Rough Ridin'" gets a demonstrative reading, as the band offers a couple of quotes from the familiar racetrack call to colors. Backed by topflight jazz personages, who she uses very effectively, this is a more than credible first outing and a solid harbinger of good things to come by Bradford. ~ Dave Nathan

Finally Yours album
$6.49 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators ...

Kevin Mahogany's decision to cover Motown hits in a jazz setting stems from his desire to not only increase the audience for jazz, but to add new material to the music's repertoire, in addition to the established standards. The results are ear-opening, particularly for those who never seriously listened to the likes of Marvin Gaye or Smokey Robinson. Mahogany, whose richly textured baritone ...

| | Chris Rea Road To Hell & Back CDs (1989) (Import) Bonus Track; Deluxe Edition; Canada
Finally Yours CD music
$38.25 The veteran British singer-songwriter Chris Rea was beginning his third decade in the music business when he released what was to become his best-known and most successful album, THE ROAD TO HELL. Rea suffered the misfortune of starting his professional music career at around the same time as Britain first embraced punk rock, and his tasteful, R&B-inspired songs were initially better received in Europe than in his home country.
THE ROAD TO HELL, released in 1991, centered on Rea's portrayal of a modern world spinning out of control, and stuck close to its narrative throughout, providing a cohesive and musically varied dissection of an increasingly dehumanized society with tracks like the shimmering "Texas," the fiery "You Must Be Evil," and the album's title track, which became one of Rea's biggest-selling records. The spare bass, drums, and guitar instrumentation effectively frames Rea's rough-hewn voice, while his stinging, bluesy guitar playing punctuates his often acerbic lyrics with a biting musical commentary.
Chris Rea was a rock star with the sort of gravel voice that was ideally suited to singing the blues, or was he a blues star who occasionally lent his talent to performing rock. The Road to Hell & Back was his 28th album in total including five different greatest-hits compilations, but was his first live album. Recorded at various venues during his 2006 tour from Warsaw to Moscow and Plymouth, Oxford and Brighton, all the tracks show a tight, together band, the Fireflies led by Chris Rea, not in the best of health but enjoying performing to appreciative, sometimes too polite audiences, who applaud in all the right places (at the end of each song). Amazingly for an artist with such a famous repertoire of songs, he had only ever hit the Top Ten of the singles chart with one song, "The Road to Hell. Pt. 2" and along with its slower precursor, "Pt. 1," is included here along with Chris ...
