| | Louis Jordan I Believe In Music CD Louis Jordan Discography of CDs
Recorded in a single Paris session on November 6, 1973, for the French label Barclay Disques, I BELIEVE IN MUSIC finds jazz vocalist Louis Jordan just barely a year prior to his death at the age of 67. In poor but not frail health, Jordan sounds somewhat subdued but hardly sickly. What's interesting about this date is that Jordan sings comparatively little, preferring to focus his energy on his under-appreciated alto saxophone skills. A blues honker in the Jimmy Forrest/King Curtis tradition, Jordan blows the hell out of his axe, trading lines with tenor Irv Cox while a hot piano-guitar-bass-drums rhythm section pounds behind them. Jordan revisits a few of his own classics, like "Saturday Night Fish Fry" and "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby," but mostly he prefers to explore other standards like Duke Ellington's "Take the A Train." The closing "Something For Louis" is a tender farewell to the recently deceased Mr. Armstrong, an old friend and cohort of Jordan's.
Recorded at Barclay Studio, Paris, France on November 6, 1973. Includes liner notes by Fred Bouchard.
Personnel: Louis Jordan (vocals, alto saxophone); Louis Myers (guitar); Irv Cox (tenor saxophone); Duke Burrell (piano); Dave Meyers, John Duke (bass); Archie Taylor, Fred Below (drums).
Reissue producer: Jerry Gordon.

I Believe In Music
$14.29 Castro's first album recorded for mighty blues indie Alligator
You might think that Castro's first album recorded for mighty blues indie Alligator--and twelfth overall --would mark a departure for this longtime rocking soulman. But despite a fuller sound, fleshed out with Lenny Castro's percussion and boosted by an ever-present horn section led by longtime cohort Keith Crossan, this is another typically solid effort from the singer/guitarist. Veteran producer/musician John Porter returns to join Castro's strong, husky vocals--a cross between Delbert McClinton, James Brown, and Bob Seger--to a rather slick, radio-friendly approach. It's a marked change from Castro's anything-goes concerts where the songs are tightly rehearsed, yet open for improvisation. Still, when the singer dives into the slow blues of "Backup Plan," all the pieces fit, and Castro's John Fogerty-styled vocals rip into the tune with the kind of aggression generally missing from the musical backing. Covers of Bob Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody" and the Righteous Brothers' rollicking "My Babe" bring out the inherent Memphis R&B grease of the former and the churchy fun of the latter without messing with the original concepts. Even better is Allen Toussaint's "Victims of the Darkness," a 1972 gem ...

| | Little Walter His Best CD (1997)
I Believe In Music
$8.09 Few would dispute that this collection is the Holy Grail of blues harmonica. Like the other entries in Chess Records' HIS BEST series, the Little Walter compilation is beautifully selected, sequenced, remastered, and packaged. At 20 tracks, HIS BEST gives a satisfying, economical summary of Walter's genius, and defends his title as the king of blues harp men. As a member of Muddy Waters's band, and on his own, Walter was one of the architects of the original Chicago sound. His propulsive chording, high-leaning notes, inventive use of amplification (he used a close-up hand-held microphone and effects like distortion and echo), ...

| | Buddy Guy Bring 'Em In CD (2005)
I Believe In Music
$8.99 Buddy Guy's 2005 release, BRING 'EM IN, has--for better and worse--all the trappings of a "music's elder statesman" album. In the tradition of seasoned professionals entering the glorious autumn of their careers, Buddy Guy has invited lots of guests to play on a record filled with well-worn chestnuts. With the exception of one tune by Guy ("What Kind of Woman is This"), the majority of the set comprises R&B classics by Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield, Bill Withers, Wilson Pickett, and Eddie Floyd.
John Mayer appears on Otis Redding's "I've Got Dreams to Remember," which fits nicely alongside an even-handed treatment of "Ain't No Sunshine" with Tracy Chapman. Keith Richards and Carlos Santana show up to chop heads with Guy on Keb Mo's "The Price You Gotta Pay" and Screamin' Jay Hawkins's "I Put A Spell on ...

| | Mississippi John Hurt Rediscovered CD (1998)
I Believe In Music
$13.89 Although usually classified as a blues musician, Mississippi John Hurt shares little musical common ground with the Mississippi Delta bluesmen that were his contemporaries. Hurt's gentle approach to guitar (which he finger-picks expertly), his vocals, and his highly melodic repertoire fall more easily into the folk category. Indeed, Hurt's music inspired a generation of '60s folkies. REDISCOVERED collects many of the recordings that folk musicians value so dearly, anthologizing the four ...
