BLUE PONY, Miller's debut record on Hightone (her previous effort was on a small, Christian-oriented label) places her as a kind of quirky alternative-Americana artist. Think of a rootsy Victoria Williams, whose voice Miller often brings to mind. As if to purposely move past the "country" label, BLUE PONY starts off strong with a rocker, "A Kiss On the Lips," with its understated energy and Hammond B-3 backing. The next song "Take Me Back," is a high lonesome duet with Julie's husband and co-producer, Hightone recording artist Buddy Miller. It recalls the kind of Appalachian folk songs that lie at the roots of commercial country music. Released in 1992, Tomb of the Mutilated helped establish Cannibal Corpse's reputation as one of metal's goriest, most vile outfits. Boasting some of the sickest album art and song titles of all time, the band's attention-getting tactics worked perfectly and record sales soared. Cannibal Corpse then became one of the biggest names in the death metal genre -- just as the group's discs and live performances were being banned all over the world. Listeners unfamiliar with the belching vocal style and pummeling drum and guitar attack typical of death metal probably won't understand what separates this or any other record that adheres so stringently to the genre's formula, but learned fans have come to appreciate Tomb of the Mutilated as a solid, if not important, offering. Vocalist Chris Barnes' constant barrage of Cookie Monster-esque lowdown grunting is pretty much unintelligible throughout, leaving his gross-out lyrics offensive only to those who read them. However, the effect works nicely and maintains tradition. Standout tracks include "Beyond the Cemetery" -- which boasts the record's best riffs -- and speedier cuts like "Split Wide Open" and "The Cryptic Stench." Fred Eaglesmith Lipstick Lies & Gasoline CD (1997)

He may be a gifted singer-songwriter from Canada, but Fred Eaglesmith is a far cry from the bookish-aesthete image of countrymen like Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell. Rather, Eaglesmith is a died-in-the-wool farm boy who owes more to Tom T. Hall than Tom Rush. He comes by his predilections honestly, though, and on LIPSTICK LIES he breathes new life into the Merle Haggard/Johnny Paycheck tradition of the hard-workin' country boy with a chip on his shoulder. Even though songs like "Time To Get A Gun" and "Seven Shells" evoke the lives of hard-livin' men of the land, the production on this album represents a step forward for Eaglesmith. While much of the album features the same acoustic-oriented country/folk stylings he's favored for some time, there are a few cuts that venture further afield with some decidedly '90s-sounding production.
