Adios Nonino album
$9.89 Let's get a popular misconception out of the way. The rap about this being one of Young's darkest, most harrowing albums is utter nonsense, perpetuated by critics who spend more time reading each other than listening to the music. TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT is dedicated to Young's guitarist Danny Whitten and roadie Bruce Berry, who died shortly before this recording was made, and the title cut details that very subject, but the darker moments here are leavened by a generous share of self-parodic humor and general Neil Young loopiness.
Sad, tender ballads like "Borrowed Tune," (itself not without humor) rub shoulders with hearty rockers like "Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown." Several tunes find Young and Crazy Horse exploring hard-edged country-rock with their collective tongue stuck firmly in the cheek, as on "Roll Another Number." Young's voice reels sadistically and purposefully out of tune, cutting through the arrangements like strategically placed barbed-wire (and providing a template for the work of Will Oldham/Palace two decades later). Sardonic, taunting, mercilessly self-deprecating, often downright funny, TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT is no gloomfest, ...

Adios Nonino music CDs
$8.79 The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of SOMETHIN' ELSE includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal.
The track "Bangoon" is the correct title for the track "Allison's Uncle" that was originally included as a bonus on previous editions of SOMETHIN' ELSE.

This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series.
When alto saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, a high school band director from Florida, passed through New York with brother Nat during a school break, he found more excitement than he was counting on. After Julian offered to sit in for a late reedman, the session's leader, bassist Oscar Pettiford confronted him with the challenging changes of "I'll Remember April," at a breakneck tempo designed to humiliate the young upstart. Instead, Adderley responded with a solo that became the talk of the town; within days, his recording career had begun; and within a year he was able to give up his teaching job to front a full-time band.
Adderley gave up his own band in 1957 when he had the opportunity to become a sideman in Miles Davis' epic ensemble with John Coltrane, resulting in some of the greatest jazz recordings of all time (including MILESTONES and KIND OF BLUE). Davis returned the favor in March of 1958, appearing as a sideman on Adderley's all-star quintet date for Blue Note, and the resulting session is indeed SOMETHIN' ELSE.
Both horn players are at their peak of lyrical invention, crafting gorgeous, flowing blues lines on the title tune and "One For Daddy-O," as the Hank Jones/Sam Jones/Art Blakey rhythm team creates a taut, focused groove (pianist Hank Jones' ...
| | Wayne Shorter Alegria CD (2003)
Adios Nonino songs
$15.59 ALEGRIA won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. "Sacajawea" won for Best Instrumental Composition.
ALEGRIA is a truly remarkable return to form for Wayne Shorter. Despite a number of missteps in the years since his acclaimed early-'60s releases JUJU and SPEAK NO EVIL, the revered tenor saxman and composer enjoyed a renaissance with 2002's well-received FOOTPRINTS LIVE and this collection of meticulously executed tunes. ALEGRIA recalls the Shorter of yore with its brainy, challenging arrangements and dexterous inside/outside musicianship. The opener "Sacajawea," for example, with its boogie rhythm and free-form solo explorations, gives ample evidence that Shorter and company mean business.
As one would expect, the musicians here are superb, with bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade holding and pushing the rhythm. Young pianist Brad Mehldau, with his delicate, classical sensibility, replaces regular keyboardist Danilo Perez on "Serenata" and a radical reworking of the Miles Davis Quintet's "Orbits." Textures continue to shift and expand as Shorter employs cello, tuba, flute, oboe, and bassoon on cuts like the spectral "Vendiendo Alegria" and the puzzle-piece "12th Century Carol," while "She Moves Through the Fair" and "Capricorn II" prove he is adept as ever with small group telepathy. Superior playing, support and--most notably--writing and arranging mark this excellent disc by one of jazz's great post-'50s ...

| | Nancy Wilson Today, Tomorrow, Forever CD (1964)
Adios Nonino songs
$9.15 Digitally remastered by using 24-bit technology by Ron McMaster.
On Today, Tomorrow, Forever, Nancy Wilson lights up a set of the usual mid-'60s pop standards: "One Note Samba," "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," "Wives and Lovers," "Our Day Will Come," and "On Broadway," among others. They're all good choices for her breathy voice and occasional improvisations, especially "One Note Samba" and "Wives and Lovers." On them, Wilson plays with the notes and rhythm, making a pair of lighthearted songs even more playful and irresistible than they had been previously. The arrangements (by her husband, Kenny Dennis) are less reliable, however. Most are sympathetic and unobtrusive (as they should be), but a few are reliant on goofy organ leads that don't quite mesh with Wilson's voice -- and were probably inserted merely for commercial reasons. On the songs where it's possible to focus just on Wilson's voice, she's simply enchanting. Considering the dozens of traditional jazz-based singers unfamiliar with their place in the middle of the turbulent '60s, Today, Tomorrow, Forever is an accomplished album that sounds almost effortless. [A 1999 two-fer reissue by Capitol/EMI paired Today, Tomorrow, Forever with Wilson's 1966 LP A Touch of Today.] ~ John Bush
