This is an exceptionally slow raag performed by one of India's great sitar maestros, Ustad Vilayat Khan. He is accompanied on tabla by Akram Khan (no relation). According to the liner notes, Khan is trying to project music that is melodically shapeless and largely free from rhythm. This intention is borne out by the recording. In addition he is supposedly imitating a singer. The beauty of the individual plucked notes would seem to confirm this as well. Fortunately for those not attuned to the ultra-slow pace, he does speed up a good deal for the final sections, where his finger work is little short of dazzling. The liner notes are lengthy and very informative, actually featuring several graphs plotting various features of the music. For the raga specialist only. ~ Kurt Keefner
sitar player performs his own creation, a delightful & romantic raga, literally an "evening melody," joined by tabla player Akram Khan - they play the raga with a slow, lyrical development typical of khyal vocal rendering, creating an enchanting vision o
Recorded at Master Sound Astoria, Queens, New York on June 21, 1991. Includes liner notes by Deepak Raja.
Personnel: Ustaad Vilayat Khan (sitar); Akram Khan (tabla).

Shortly after Junior Wells's watershed album, HOODOO MAN BLUES, was released on Delmark in 1965, Wells moved to Vanguard where he recorded a string of very strong albums that showcased his formidable harp skills and charisma-drenched vocal performances. BEST OF includes cuts from his '60s Vanguard releases, including the topical "Vietcong Blues" and the moving "Help Me (A Tribute to Sonny Boy Williamson)," as well as the R&B-influenced "Shake It Baby" and "Stormy Monday Blues." Wells's sound is notable for its traces of R&B and rock & roll, but, in spirit, the music is pure blues through and through.

| | Machine Drum Urban Biology CD (2002)
Raga Sanjh Saravali songs
$15.69 Pitched between the dancefloor and the chill-out room but definitely leaning toward the latter, Machine Drum's second album, 2002's Urban Biology, moves away from the IDM leanings of 2001's Now You Know into an artsier, trippier sound not far removed from DJ Spooky's turntablism. These 15 pieces are built on samples and found sound tapes, not breakbeats, but there's a similarly musique concrète feel to the way tracks like "Cream Soda Part 1" and "Urban Biology" mix heavily processed ambient location recordings and wiggly synth lines, or the way the six-minute "Countchocula" conflates cool, vibey ...
