Personnel: Steve Lawrence (vocals). Steve Lawrence was only 16 years old when he signed to King Records in the spring of 1952. A year later, King issued his self-titled debut LP as he began to gain recognition due to his appearances on the late-night talk show Tonight!, broadcast by the New York NBC-TV station (later to morph into the long-running national series The Tonight Show). It led off with his sole hit, a revival of the 1943 song "Poinciana," which had reached number 21 in the charts in August 1952, and included other songs released earlier on singles, including "Never Leave Me," "How Many Stars Have to Shine," and "Tango of Roses (Love Me)." Not surprisingly, the teenage singer, taking his lead from conductor Dewey Bergman, who had signed him to the label, tried to mold himself somewhat after such emotive male singers of the day as Tony Bennett and Frankie Laine, working for near-operatic effects, which was not, as it later turned out, really his métier. As a result, his first long-player ranks largely as a work of juvenilia, giving few clues to the singer he would become. ~ William Ruhlmann Steve Lawrence Music Review Purchase Steve Lawrence CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Songs By Steve Lawrence CD (1957)

Steve Lawrence
$9.85 Originally released on Reprise (6118). While certainly not the most comprehensive of the Lou Monte greatest-hits compilations out there, Golden Hits is still a fun collection of some of what the singer offered his listeners. Sung in a mixture of English and standard and dialectic Italian, the 12 songs on the album show off Monte's strong clear voice, various influences (besides Italian folk, also there's jazz and traditional American pop), and sense of humor (as, for example, he pretends to be Luigi, a sailor on one of Columbus' ships, asking him to "turna da ship around"). It's ...

| | Clayton Laurence Cheek Duke Of Rural CD (2007)
Steve Lawrence
$18.95 "Clayton's delivery is up-close and addictive on Duke of Rural. When I'm dancing across the floor with Miss Darlene or to the bluesy Bye-Bye- Chicago, the only thing that keeps me from hitting the replay button is that I know the next track is just as good! Hey, can you drink a CD?" Nikki Mitchell Nikki Mitchell is President of Waylon Jennings Music "Duke of Rural is a wonderful album that grows on me each time I listen to it. It's a rich brew that's understated, but not undercooked. Everything is very tasty; nothing is superfluous. I especially like Don't Play Dominos With Angels. It's an amazing piece of work that is Dylanesque without being derivative. Snow Fell On Pawnee is my number-one favorite. It's a great song, no doubt, a really special piece. It works on so many levels, and whether it is based on a true or personal experience or not, it certainly feels that way. It's very touching and evocative. There is something I like about all the songs on Duke of Rural and I appreciate the 'consistent variety' Clayton presents in this fine collection of songs." Dan Tyler Dan Tyler has written numerous hit songs, including 'Modern Day Romance' for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, 'The Light in Your Eyes' for Leann Rimes, 'Twenty Years Ago' for Kenny Rogers and 'Bobby-Sue' for the Oak Ridge Boys. "Duke of Rural is the perfect road-trip CD!" David Mead David Mead is a singer/songwriter from Nashville who has toured the USA, Japan, UK and Ireland with Joe Jackson, Ron Sexsmith, Fountains of Wayne and John Mayer. His recordings include Luxury of Time, Mine and Yours, Indiana, Wherever You Are and Tangerine. From Taproot Radio"On Duke of Rural, singer/songwriter Clayton Laurence Cheek serves up equal doses of heartache and good- natured ballads. Mr. Cheek has a great imagination for the just right, slice-of-life songs that enable you to fill in the details on your own. ...
