| | Doyle Lawson Kept & Protected CD (1997)
Grand Old Gospel CD music
$15.05 Doyle Lawson's band Quicksilver has long been known as a launching pad for young bluegrass musicians -- you could almost call the group a farm team if it wasn't so consistently of major-league quality. The lineup on this all-gospel album features singers and multi-instrumentalists Dale Perry and Barry Scott, both of whom would remain with Quicksilver for longer than most and would, with guitarist and singer Jamie Dailey, form the nucleus of what may be Lawson's finest band. Kept & Protected finds the group sticking mainly to straight-ahead bluegrass-gospel, performing such standards as "I Have Found the Way" and "The Glory Land Way," but also expanding into gospel styles that draw explicitly on other traditions. "My Lord Is Writing All the Time" is a funky a cappella quartet piece that harks back to the African-American gospel groups that Lawson heard throughout his childhood, while "You Are My Hiding Place," with its solfege introduction, refers to the shape note hymn singing tradition even as it employs a fruitier, more modern chord ...

| | Cathy Dennis Move To This CD (1990)
Grand Old Gospel songs
$5.55 Though not in a class with fellow British R&B/dance divas Lisa Stansfield or Caron Wheeler, Cathy Dennis proved herself to be a welcome addition to Britain's '90s R&B scene with Move to This -- a decent, though not remarkable, effort released when she was riding high on her hit with dance outfit D-Mob, "C'Mon and Get My Love," and her single "Just Another Dream" (both of which are among the CD's high points). The girlish-sounding Dennis doesn't have a great range, but she does have heart -- and is indeed warm and convincing on such sleek and infectious dance-floor fare as "Got to Get Your Love," "Taste My Love," and "Everybody Move" (which was produced by Nile Rodgers of Chic fame). Dennis is at her worst when moving from R&B/dance music to bloodless adult contemporary-oriented pop, like the ballads "Too Many Walls," and "My Beating Heart." Amazingly, the latter was also produced by Rodgers -- who has produced gems for everyone from David Bowie to Madonna, but wastes his considerable talents on "My Beating Heart." Nonetheless, Move to This has more strengths than weaknesses, and reminds us that England is definitely a country to pay attention to when it comes to dance music. ~ Alex Henderson
Audio Remixer: Alan Gregorie.

| | Johnny Cash Sun Years CD (1990)
Grand Old Gospel CD music
$5.95 Born in Arkansas, Johnny Cash began his musical career in the early 1950s, following his discharge from the Air Force. Cash developed his sound with Luther Perkins (lead guitar) and Marshall Grant (bass). Their debut, "Hey Porter"/"Cry! Cry! Cry!" emerged in 1955 on Sun Records followed by "Folsom Prison Blues" and "I Walk the Line." In 1958 Carl Perkins' drummer, W.S. Holland, joined and Cash switched to Columbia Records, and another single, "Don't Take Your Guns to Town," sold half a million. Cash married June Carter in 1968 and they had several hit duets.
Solo, Cash recorded AT FOLSOM PRISON, which remains his best album and a contender for the best country record of all time. Shel Silverstein ...
