Gospel and Christian-themed music was always integral to the Louvin Brothers repertoire; any given album or collection is likely to include one or two tunes infused with the power of the Holy Spirit. At its title indicates, 20 GREATEST GOSPEL HITS focuses on the bluegrass duo's best-known church-inspired music.
The way Charles and Ira's angelic harmonizing soars and lilts yet burns with sincerity gives itself nicely to the interpretation of sacred music. The simple guitar and mandolin arrangements are pure rootsy mountain folk, while "The Kneeling Drunkard's Plea," "The Family That Prays Together," and "Wreck on the Highway" crackle with the moral conviction of backwoods fire-and-brimstone church houses. But sermonizing never sounded so high, clear, and sweet, which is reason enough to give 20 GREATEST GOSPEL HITS a listen.

Born in Arkansas, Johnny Cash began his musical career in the early 1950s, following his discharge from the Air Force. Cash developed his sound with Luther Perkins (lead guitar) and Marshall Grant (bass). Their debut, "Hey Porter"/"Cry! Cry! Cry!" emerged in 1955 on Sun Records followed by "Folsom Prison Blues" and "I Walk the Line." In 1958 Carl Perkins' drummer, W.S. Holland, joined and Cash switched to Columbia Records, and another single, "Don't Take Your Guns to Town," sold half a million. Cash married June Carter in 1968 and they had several hit duets.
Solo, Cash recorded AT FOLSOM PRISON, which remains his best album and a contender for the best country record of all time. Shel Silverstein gave him "A Boy Named Sue," which became Cash's only Top 10 pop hit. Cash has recorded many religious albums, including THE GOSPEL ROAD with Kris Kristofferson, Larry Gatlin, and the Statler Brothers. Cash moved to Mercury Records in 1986 and found success immediately with "The Night Hank Williams Came to Town" and an all-star album, WATER FROM THE WELLS OF HOME, with Emmylou Harris, the Everly Brothers, and Paul McCartney. His contribution to country music is inestimable.

For Daft Punk fanatics wondering about the origins of the French electronica duo's tunes, DISCOVERED solves the mystery, revealing the source material behind many of the act's catchiest melodies and most infectious rhythms. While some of the songs featured on the compilation are obvious--the edgy guitar/synth hook of Breakwater's funky "Release the Beast" is easily recognizable from "Robot Rock"--other tracks are less easy to peg, such as "The Rec Room," a slinky mood piece by composer Jerry Goldsmith that turns up in the Daft Punk dance-floor classic "Around the World."
