| | Killbilly Foggy Mountain Anarchy CD Killbilly Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
All songs written or co-written by members of Killbilly except "Jesse James" (traditional) and "Hare Krsna" (B. Mould/G. Hart/G. Norton).
The second album from Killbilly, the world's foremost purveyors of "heavy metal bluegrass," Foggy Mountain Anarchy reveals a band that has become significantly more confident and aggressive since its first disc. While before it seemed as if Killbilly's metal elements were primarily comprised of the band's name, wardrobe, and the fact that it had a drum kit, here the group more convincingly integrates the attitude and musical flavors of heavy music into itsbluegrass. Most of the material is first-rate, particularly the opening track, "Mountain Dew or Die," which is a furiously high-octane tribute to the virtues of good country livin'. For those in doubt, by the way, the group really does rock, playing straight bluegrass tunes with a reckless abandon worthy of the bassist's G.G. Allin T-shirt. Luckily, however, Killbilly isn't a one-trick pony, as there are bits of subtlety and pathos among the madness. "Heaven Is a Small Town" is a standout in this regard, with a gentle alt-country lilt that recalls the best work of Wilco. That said, the album's most obvious highlight is a supercharged reading of '80s punk group Hüsker Dü's Zen Arcade classic, "Hare Krsna." Foggy Mountain Anarchy should appeal to bluegrass fans who wonder why new groups haven't been able to match the intensity of the genre's creators, as well as adventurous rockers in the mood for a hoedown. ~ Pemberton Roach

Foggy Mountain Anarchy CD music
$13.05 Generally, it's a good idea to be wary of actors who make pop albums, but every rule has at least one exception, and She and Him's VOLUME ONE is an unfettered delight. A collaboration between actress Zooey Deschanel (ALMOST FAMOUS, ELF) and prolific indie-folk musician M. Ward, She and Him is not merely a case of a cult musician using a more famous name as an entrée into the musical mainstream: in fact, Deschanel is the primary songwriter here and sings all the lead vocals barring a pair of duets, and she scores impressively on both fronts.
Deschanel turns out to be a gifted pop songwriter with a knack for penning crisp 1960s-style pop songs like the glorious first single, "Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?" and singing them in a flirty, country-inflected style that recalls the likes of Jackie DeShannon and early Linda Ronstadt. ...
| | Jerry Douglas Slide Rule CD (1992)
Foggy Mountain Anarchy music CDs
$15.05 Another solo record from the man Molly O'Brien once referred to as "our Jerry." Like late Grateful Dead ringmaster Jerry Garcia, Douglas has legions of fans hanging on every note, festivarians and acolytes for whom the most-recorded Dobro player on the planet can do no wrong. Impressively, Douglas does not coast on this status but tries his damnedest to make a great record every time he collects his thoughts in the form of a solo outing.
SLIDE RULE finds Douglas returning to a more bluegrass-based acoustic sound after his "new acoustic" adventures of the '80s. On those MCA Masters Series records, he messed around with digital processing and drums--with mixed results. With ...

Foggy Mountain Anarchy music CDs
$16.19 Words like "shimmering" and "jangling" seem like such rock clichés, but if any guitars ever deserved the term, those on Forever Breathes the Lonely Word certainly do. The album is almost too perfect a pop masterpiece -- upbeat, succinct, and wildly catchy -- with the only out-of-place element being Lawrence Hayward's Tom Verlaine-esque vocals. That's not a drawback, though -- the imperfect vocals give the ...

In the wake of 2005's Hurricane Katrina, albums coming out of New Orleans have taken on an increased significance. Music is, arguably, the most essential part of New Orleans's culture, and as residents work to ensure that their city's heritage is not neglected during rebuilding, each new work of art produced carries with it a component of relief and optimism. 2006's SING ME BACK HOME, from the New Orleans Social ...
