Like WILD LOVE and KNOCK KNOCK, RED APPLE FALLS represents the more elaborate side of Bill Callahan's discography. His outsider/loser image is still perfectly intact, but it is shaped here with a more expansive sonic palette. Everything from ... Full DescriptionFrench horn and pedal steel to hurdy gurdy is employed on these unassumingly poetic tales of self-loathing. There's a larger cast than usual at work here, and the denser musical texture may be the reason Callahan's lyrical self-deprecation seems more like an artistic device than a desperate cry in the wilderness. The use of more natural, organic imagery in the songs, however, adds an extra level of depth to the subtle, carefully constructed lyrics.
Recorded from October 30 to November 3, 1996.
Smog: Bill Callahan (vocals, guitar, piano, Hammond B-3 organ, synthesizer).
Additional personnel: Ken Champion (pedal steel guitar); Thymme Jones (trumpet, piano, drums); Donna Maroni (French horn); James O'Rourke (hurdy gurdy, piano, Hammond B-3 organ, bass, drums); Matt Weston, Robot (drums).
Q (6/97, p.139) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...[Bill] Callahan lures you in, only to break you on the rocks of his seemingly inescapable depression. Another field day then, for fans of weepy minimalism." Option (7-8/97, p.128) - "...[Leader Bill Callahan] has decisively freed Smog from the clutch of lo-fi and introduced it to the mature world of fine-tuned fidelity....all the unabashed musicality of a deliberately well-produced album." Red Apple Falls album
$12.35 Bill Callahan, aka Smog, started taping his music in the dark, lo-fi insularity of his bedroom/basement/whatever, and it is remarkable to see his songs finally come out into the light. THE DOCTOR CAME AT DAWN peels away about 20 layers of the gray-noise fuzz usually found on Smog records, to reveal a wondrous, emotionally-direct batch of folk songs. Welcome to the hi-fi bedroom recordings of the spiritually unstable (and tales thereof).
The sheer voyeurism of Callahan's acoustic-guitar-and-dread approach makes it difficult to listen to THE DOCTOR CAME AT DAWN at times. But that's also a mark of craftsmanship. Minor details like the use of singer Cynthia Dall as a foil on the gentle yet biting "Lize," ...
| | Built To Spill Perfect From Now On CD (1997)
Red Apple Falls CD music
$8.59 Whereas on 1995's BUILT TO SPILL CAUSTIC RESIN EP, Built to Spill main-man Doug Martsch used a couple of silly premises and a Kicking Giant cover to get to the guitar flamethrowas, on PERFECT FROM NOW ON, Martsch and fellow axe-grinder Brett Netson duel on tunes that could've been some of the loveliest, most inventive, three-minute guitar-pop of the '90s. Could've been, that is, without those fantastic duels. Instead, PERFECT FROM NOW ON, the band's major-label debut, strikes a balance between tunesmanship and molten-lava guitar flow.
Martsch, who has surrounded himself with a revolving cast of players for most of Built To Spill's existence, has an unassuming voice, and the lyrics on PERFECT FROM NOW ON hint at insecurities and doubts. There is no such insecurity in the music. Martsch's melodies arrive as unexpectedly ...
| | Yo La Tengo I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One CD (1997)
Red Apple Falls music CDs
$9.75 Yo La Tengo began life as one among hundreds of Velvet Underground-inspired bands, banging out dark, skittish tunes that displayed YLT guitarist/vocalist Ira Kaplan's affection for Uncle Lou as well as Yo La Tengo's commitment to creating a gently subversive groove. Over the years, the band, which also features Kaplan's wife Georgia Hubley on drums and vocals, has gone through more identity changes than David Bowie, from acoustic folk-rock to wailing, Sonic Youth-like guitarchitecture.
On this album, the band consolidates their sound as they expand it, incorporating bossa nova, electronica and '60s pop into a gorgeous shimmering whole that is something more than the sum of its parts. The laconic-but-expressive vocals of Kaplan and Hubley ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Red Apple Falls songs
$11.59 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin ...

Red Apple Falls album
$11.89 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act II" will latch onto SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA with the same passion with which they embraced THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY. And most importantly, unreconstructed Southern ...
