Butch Hancock's discography is somewhat difficult to piece together. Many of his albums originally appeared on the small Rainlight label, and while a number of these albums have been reissued on CD, some have not. Firewater is Hancock's fourth album, a thrown-together live set recorded at the Alamo Lounge in Austin in 1980 (and released the following year). Pete Anderson's third solo outing has been a long time coming, and one gets the distinct impression that it's the album he's been itching to make all along. Given that Daredevil is completely instrumental, the guitar geeks already have something to salivate about. But there's much more to it than that. Anderson played the vast majority of instruments, with help in a few places from multi-instrumentalist Skip Edwards and minimal assistance from trumpeter Lee Thornberg and fiddler Donny Reed as well. The Ralph Stanley name has got to be quite a burden for a young bluegrass singer, but Ralph Stanley II (who plays guitar and sings with his father's band, the Clinch Mountain Boys) continues to bear it gracefully on his second solo album. His voice, a rich, relaxed baritone, couldn't be more different from his father's, and in fact it's a pretty unusual lead voice for bluegrass in general. But it does bear some resemblance to that of his late uncle Carter, and that gives an eerie beauty to the songs on which he and his father sing in harmony, such as "Pretty Girls, City Lights" and "I'll Just Catch a Train and Ride." The music on this highly entertaining CD is much more of a group effort than the title would suggest. Make no mistake, Harry Reser was one of the great banjo virtuosos, although his style was totally of the strummed, plectrum variety without a trace of the mystic quality of Appalachian banjo or the fingerpicking stunts of bluegrass players. With the banjo's rapid sound decay and complete lack of fortitude in certain registers, a combo with plenty of harmonic punch, like a good piano player, is required to pull off the kind of ragtime, early swing, and novelty numbers that make up the repertoire here.
