While flamenco forms the musical structure for Armik's fifth effort Isla del Sol, the renowned guitarist adds the warmth of tropical elements to the album's compositions. Spicy and sensuous, Isla del Sol will not disappoint Armik's many fans. ~ Heather Phares

| | Lisa Desforges Permitted But Not Aloud! CD (2006)
Isla Del Sol music CDs
$15.95 In an amazing flash of vibrant creativity and compelling inspiration, Lisa Desforges has arrived on the indie scene with her debut album "Permitted but Not Aloud!" Combining a sophisticated compilation of soul-searching lyrics with beautiful, velvety-smooth vocals, heart-cutting poetry, and highly-expressive artwork, Lisa delivers a wide variety of sensual music that both stimulates artistic appetites and challenges traditional ways-of-thinking. Her voice is truly unique and cannot be adequately compared with any other artist. It’s really hard to find one who embodies the diversity which Lisa exemplifies, a diversity that takes the listener on a journey through different landscapes, ambiances and moods. Stylistically, however, her works are reminiscent of the likes of Jewel, Lisa Loeb, Natalie Merchant, Sade and Sarah McLachlan. Her debut album is a work of art born from an up-hill battle to make a life-long dream a reality. Lisa has been surrounded by diverse music for her entire life. “One of my first vivid memories is of my dad singing and playing his guitar to me. He played in many rock bands and could pick a mean banjo expressing his interests in classic rock-n-roll, country and bluegrass. We had a music room in our basement which served as the local hot-spot for weekend jam sessions between my father and as many as a dozen friends all with ‘colorful’ personalities. Lisa’s mother, a faithful fan of the top 10 hits of the 60s and 70s would regularly spin-up Motown hits from her impressive 45” record collection numbering well into the high hundreds. Her aunt, a classically trained operatic vocalist, has performed at many local Massachusetts venues and for WWII soldiers from the age of 13 and she regularly escorted Lisa around the Newport Jazz Festival at an early age. To add yet another layer of diverse music indoctrination, Lisa’s grandparents immersed her into their ethnic Portuguese Fado music at local church gatherings and bazaars, family occasions, and at home on the radio. It was in this music-rich environment Lisa grew up and discovered her true love of music, songwriting and artistic self-expression.Her talents grew as a teenager, and from that time to present, she has sung lead in many ...
| | Gipson & Fitz Trio Rail Car CD (2008)
Isla Del Sol songs
$16.45 Gipson & Fitz Trio To call it bluegrass is just too easy! \"It would be a tremendous mistake to write off the Gipson and Fitz Trio\'s debut cd, \"Rail Car\" as \"just another bluegrass record.\" Certainly, the elements of classic bluegrass are here: rolling banjo, chopping mandolin, delicate vocal harmonies, and hot licks abundant. But to call this music bluegrass is just too easy, and it does a disservice to the men who created it. No, this music is something else, more than bluegrass. Bluegrass, in the minds of most, is the classic sound of Bill Monroe. Not to deride that master, but times have changed. Eras have swept away and the genre has evolved. John Hartford pioneered the modern Americana movement, and the Gipson and Fitz Trio are proudly carrying on the tradition. \"Rail Car\" is intertwined with tunes crafted by the group\'s principle song writers, Brant Gipson and Mark Fitzharris. The original tunes sparkle with traditional flair, but there is a wink and a nod to modern times and many musical genres. A close listen to the vocal harmonies reveals a love of early 70\'s rock. The guitar and mandolin lines often pay tribute to jazz and blues legends. And on the album\'s swan song, \"Gotta Go,\" there is a verse cleverly dedicated to a wide variety of music genres. Then, there are the cover songs. Cover songs on record are often an unappealing mess. Gipson, Fitzharris and upright bass man extraordinaire, Billy Cory, have spent years working through countless versions of other people\'s songs in their live show. This dedication to originality has yielded two of the best cover versions in a long time. Their take on \"Columbus Stockade Blues\" adds an urgency and yearning to the mix, and their version of \"Summertime,\" one of the most covered songs of all time, has rarely been done better than it is in this jaw dropping slow/fast version. The Gipson and Fitz Trio has been called \"the hottest acoustic trio in Central Ohio.\" I\'m not sure if this is an attempt at humor, but it shouldn\'t be. This group is one of the best acoustic acts anywhere, and \"Rail Cars\" should cement them as an act to follow. Somewhere, John Hartford is smiling.\" -K.G. (Nashville, TN)The ...
