This swinging collection boasts two sessions that feature trumpeter Bill Hardman: one as a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, and one as the leader of his own quintet. The Blakey session is from 1957 and features a stellar lineup that also includes a fiery young Jackie McLean, pianist Sam Dockery, and bassist Spanky DeBrest.
As usual, Blakey's powerful drumming spurs his men to great heights, on cuts such as Gigi Gryce's "Casino," the burning "Ugh!" and the title track. As a bonus, Blakey takes a stunning solo outing on the only stereo cut of the session, the aptly title "Study in Rhythm." Hardman's lyrical style is in evidence on his session's opening standard "Angel Eyes," as the trumpeter makes an expressive statement in both the melody and his subsequent solo spots. Things get more intricate with the rhythmic "Jo B.," a complex mix of Latin and swing that features a tasty solo by Jimmy Cobb, while the slow ballad "With Malice Towards None" and the bouncing bopper "Capers" finish the set.
