| | Allman Brothers Band Dreams CDs (1989) Box Set
Still Jumpin' The Blues
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive Allman Brothers collection nor the gift to hardcore fans that, say, THE BOOTLEG SERIES is to Dylan-philes.
DREAMS' strengths are considerable. First and foremost, the box contains nearly five wall-to-wall hours of great music. By including everything from early demos to Gregg Allman and Dickie Betts' solo material, DREAMS does a great job of tracing the group's musical evolution from hippie blues band to kings of Southern rock. And, while the unreleased studio version of "Statesboro Blues" included here isn't definitive, it's still mighty good-as are the set's other rarities. Start your Allman Brothers collection with THE FILLMORE CONCERTS; if that ...

| | Kim Wilson Lookin' For Trouble CD (2003)
Still Jumpin' The Blues
$13.65 LOOKIN 'FOR TROUBLE was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album.
Though he's best known as the frontman for the blues-rocking Fabulous Thunderbirds, singer/harmonica player Kim Wilson has quietly carved out a career for himself as one of the most authentic-sounding blues players of the 21st century. Wilson is obviously well-schooled in the blues, and dips into the catalog of Chicago blues godfather Willie Dixon with aplomb on "Love My Baby," but he's equally capable of crafting original songs that honor the spirit of post-war electric blues without coming off as self-consciously nostalgic. The raw-but-right recording approach helps a great deal; the tracks were laid down in just three days with an extremely live feel that recalls the classic Chess productions of the 1950s. Wilson's soulful voice is emotive but never histrionic, and his down-and-dirty harp work lends an agreeable portion of grit and grease to LOOKIN' FOR ...
| | Blue Trane: John Coltrane Plays The Blues CD (1996)
Still Jumpin' The Blues
$11.25 Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1996, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
This compilation pulls together six long-ish numbers from six different releases dating from 1957 to 1958. The era was a particularly rich one for Coltrane, who had recently gotten off drugs and alcohol and played some legendary gigs with Thelonious Monk at New York's Five Spot. Trane was already well versed in the blues, and Monk had recently familiarized him with a fingering technique that enabled him to play polyphonically.
Coltrane's genius as a soloist is evident on every track here. Surrounded by top-notch players, Trane plays with characteristic exuberance and spontaneity. The set begins with the stripped-down "Slowtrane," with just Trane's sax, the bass of Earl May and the drums of Arthur Taylor. "Traneing In" is augmented by the addition of pianist Red Garland and some nifty bass work by Paul Chambers, a preeminent player of the era. "The Real McCoy," on which Coltrane plays with an octet including two other saxophonists, is notable for ...
