Ace Frehley's 1978 Kiss solo album is often rightfully considered the best of the bunch. Like Paul Stanley's album, it follows in the expected heavy Kiss style, but Frehley had something to prove with his album. Ace was just gaining confidence in his songwriting and singing at the time, so it served as a much-needed showcase to prove that he was as integral to Kiss as the band's main songwriters, Stanley and Gene Simmons. Ace's album was the only one of the four to spawn a true hit single, the funky rocker "New York Groove," while the rest of the album is a consistent set of guitar-fueled heavy rock.
Lyrically, several of the songs deal with alcohol and drug abuse ("Snowblind," "Ozone," and "Wiped Out"), something that both Frehley and drummer Peter Criss had succumbed to (eventually leading to their dismissal from the band). Other standouts include the pretty, multi-tracked instrumental "Fractured Mirror," the vicious album-opener "Rip It Out," the Zeppelin-esque "I'm In Need of Love," as well as a pair of melodic compositions, "Speedin' Back to My Baby" and "What's on Your Mind?" Although Frehley would issue several other solo albums in the '80s, he never topped his inspired '78 Kiss solo album.

Classic Rock at its best! Ace's solo album stands on its own as all time classic rock masterpiece. There is not a bad song on it. From the opening thunder of Rip It Out to the chiming layered guitars of Fractured Mirror this is Ace's masterpiece. Ace proves that he was the rock n roll heart and soul of KISS and a terribly underrated guitarist in his own right. Back In The New York Groove was the big hit from this set but the original compositions outshine it by far. Unfortunately this album would be mark the peak of his creative abilities as the long slow descent into addiction robbed him of is juice. I recently obtained Ace's latest solo effort which rises very close to this level but time has eroded the pure fire that he once possessed. Totally awesome rock!!! best of the solo albums, ace really shines on this album, i think back in the new york groove is one the weaker songs, snowblind is killer, speed back to my baby, awesome, overall, this is a really great album, anton fig rocks on here, the other 3 albums don't even come close, but i would say pauls is next best to this, gene's and peters are just pure garbage Submitted by halenroth84 (thunder bay, ontario canada) Was This Review Helpful? Solo debut of Ace I remember hearing this around 78 when it originally was released. I knew some diehard Kiss fans who had all 4 solo albums. Ace Frehley's was by far, the best. Such tracks as Speeding Back to My Baby, Rip It Out, Snowblind, Ozone, Wiped Out and so on made for great listening. The solo-long collaberation with Anton Fig began here. Also started was the instrumental Fractured Mirror. This is a very fine release as are most of Ace's albums. Makes one wonder why Mr. Simmons and Stanley gave him his walking papers. welcome to planet jendel avoid the peter criss album which is jazzy bubblegum that sounds like a disco. paul was a sap! ha ha ha!. gene i don't think i can like that guy after having his own reality show. ugh!. now space ace is here to save the day for us metal freaks. rip it out, snowblind, ozone and wiped out are the hardcore rockers. eddie kramer does an excellent job producing the album. new york groove is a funky song that went to the top 40 and lastly the tender fractured mirror is like a carlos santana ballad but with less latin overtones and more of a mix of sweet acoustics and hard electrics. get it steal it do whatever you need to because it is one of the hardest rocking albums of the history or kisstory of the band. and if you want more try his band frehley's comet.
