Rush's sophomore release FLY BY NIGHT has become a milestone in their recording career. Although such future releases as 2112, HEMISPHERES, PERMANENT WAVES, and MOVING PICTURES would be superior albums, FLY BY NIGHT signaled a change from Led Zep blues-rock to more original and challenging material. But most important of all, FLY BY NIGHT was drummer/lyricist Neil Peart's first recording with the band. Peart had replaced original member John Rutsey just in time for Rush's inaugural U.S. tour, and became an integral member by the time of FLY BY NIGHT's recording.
Several early Rush classics can be found here. "Anthem" is a barnstorming opener merging a memorable, repetitive guitar riff with positive lyrics, while the title track is one of Rush's most pop-oriented compositions (second only to future hits "Closer To the Heart" and "Time Stand Still"). Also included are two tracks which turned out to be crowd favorites at Rush concerts for years to come- -the sci-fi epic "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" and the rocking ballad "In the End," while other highlights include "Beneath, Between, Behind" and the reflective "Making Memories." With FLY BY NIGHT, Rush had begun their journey towards becoming one of the world's finest hard rock bands.

Fly By Night Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews By-Tor and the Snowdog By-Tor and the Snowdog with its sci-fi/horror lurics would set the stage for Rush's more complex story songs as well as being a concert favorite. The whole album is great! It still sounds fresh today! I wish Neil Peart would go back to writing sci-fi/horror lyrics. This is truly a magnifacent hard rock album. "Rush out and buy this disc" This isn't my absolute favorite RUSH album of all-time but one theirs I return to more than some others. The songs that I love the most are IN THE END,MAKING MEMORIES,RIVENDELL,and the great title track FLY BY NIGHT.My favorite albums by them is 2112,MOVING PICTURES,PERMANENT WAVES,and HEMISPHERES.But FLY BY NIGHT will work in a pinch as my friend Ron says. Long Live By-Tor As the proud owner of PA liscence plate which reads "By-Tor," this album is clearly one of my favorites. The jump they made from a Zeppelin-y cover band on their first album to this album was indeed a quantum leap. Peart's drumming and lyrics were surely a big part of that reason, but the songwriting of Lee/Lifeson had also taken a big leap forward. I love tunes like "Anthem," "Best I Can," "By-Tor...," "Fly By Night" and "In The End." Submitted by dcampbell (East Stroudsburg, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Snow Dog is Victorious. Rush's best album by far!!!! If you love good ol rock and roll then this album is for you. Fly by Night is awesome from start to end! I like this style before the 80's synth sound came along, but before you judge me I do like Moving Pictures and Signals too. These old Rush tracks are just plan and simple bass, drums, and lead guitars and thats all you need. Geddy really screams out the lyrics on this album. Its hard to say which track I like best. If you are new to Rush do like I did several years ago, and start out buying their albums in the order they put them out. That way you can follow their changes from then till now. Not to put their other albums down, but they really had their stuff together on Fly by Night. Submitted by Loyal Rush Fan (Dixieland U.S.A.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Fly By Night album
$6.75 The opening chords of "Finding My Way" signal the beginning of a song, album, and career that would have a permanent place in rock history. The debut album from the Canadian progressive metal outfit features drummer John Rutsey who, although a talented drummer, would quit after this album to be replaced by Neal Peart. Peart contributed to the band's songwriting progression and use of time changes.
Out of the eight songs here, four are considered Rush classics. "Finding My Way" and "What You're Doing" both contain killer guitar riffs, while Geddy Lee's high pitched vocal endeared him to Rush fans the world over. "In the Mood" is symbolic of the band's early material, which is more rock & roll party oriented, as opposed to the sophisticated lyrics of the Peart era. "Working Man" concludes ...
| | Rush Caress Of Steel CD (1975) Remastered
Fly By Night CD music
$6.49 After building up a cult following with years of non-stop touring, Rush nearly lost their fans with CARESS OF STEEL. Taking their cue from British bands like Yes and Genesis, they began to expand their sound beyond that of a typical power trio. Gone were the riff-based songs and extended jams, replaced with more intricate arrangements, multi-part songs and deeper, introspective lyrics. Ironically, it was these elements that would later win them an international audience.
The album kicks off with "Bastille Day," a tough account of the French revolution, followed with an almost comical song "I Think I'm Going Bald," which finds Geddy Lee lamenting his advancing age (he was all of 21 or 22 at the time). The main reason to own this ...
| | Rush 2112 CD (1976) Remastered
Fly By Night music CDs
$7.75 Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24 karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box.
2112 is archetypal high-concept heavy/art-rock, featuring an interconnected suite of songs and a futuristic science fiction-inspired lyrical theme (courtesy of drummer/sole lyricist Neil Peart). When it came to '70s sci fi rock epics these guys were capable of giving Hawkwind and Jefferson Starship a run for their money. The first half of the album features "2112" proper, a series of interrelated tunes that paint a portrait of a 1984/Brave New World-style future, where music and emotion are outlawed. Ultimately, our hero discovers a guitar and uses it to fight the powers that be, all to the ...
| | Rush Farewell To Kings CD (1977) Remastered
Fly By Night songs
$8.29 Taking a cue from other art-rock groups like Yes and Genesis, Rush expressed a penchant for fantasy and science fiction themes on A FAREWELL TO KINGS. Coupling the increasingly intricate arrangements of Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson with the creative lyrics of Neil Peart, the power trio format is stretched beyond recognition on epic tracks like the sensational "Xanadu," a masterful re-telling of Kubla Kahn's "Pleasure Dome" along the river Alph.
KINGS also introduced a more lyrical side of the group with "Closer To The Heart," a work of sheer beauty that would become a concert mainstay. The lesser-known rocker "Cinderella Man" and the graceful "Madrigal" offer creative tangents that explore the mysteries of the human psyche and emotions. The grand finale is a work of magnificent complexity and fantasy known as "Cygnus X-1." This multi-part suite introduces an unnamed space traveler who descends into a mysterious black hole in his rocket ship, the "Rocinante," ...

Fly By Night CD music
$6.55 Falling somewhere in between heavy metal and AOR, Rush were one of the success stories of the period from 1976 to 1986--all the more surprising because few Canadians manage to break out from the land of the maple leaf in this area of music. Much of their following idolized Alex Lifeson, who was ...

Fly By Night songs
$20.09 This 1969 album from bluesy psychedelic Japanese band Apryl Fool features nine English-language tracks, including a cover of Bob Dylan's "Pledging My Time."
The Apryl Fool was a very accomplished late-'60s band from Japan whose lone, self-titled album is a great mixture of hard psych and blues-rock. Their best-known track is probably "The Lost Mother Land, Pt. 1," which was featured on the Japanese volume of QDK's Love, Peace and Poetry series, certainly one of the most crazed, over the top productions and performances in the entire series, with its massively phased and treated vocals and general menace. But that tune is really the anomaly on the album, despite the prevalence of monstrous fuzz guitar on a number of tracks. At their heart, the Apryl Fool seem to be a blues-rock ...

Fly By Night music CDs
$9.79 It's a well-proven fact that there are more Dusty Springfield greatest-hits compilations than there are proper releases. This time around, Another Little Piece of My Heart: The Love Songs is an 18-song sampler tracing the Brit-pop diva's softer, more romantic side. It's not a thorough greatest-hits disc by any stretch, but what is supplied here comes close to the mark, especially with "The Look of Love," "I Only Want to Be with You," ...
