Prior to Lovedrive's recording, the Scorpions' lineup had a major change when their lead guitarist, Uli Jon Roth, quit the group (not to mention, the rock genre was rapidly changing). With this in mind, the band not only highlighted the album with the licks and riffs of three guitarists (Rudolf Schenker, Michael Schenker, Matthias Jabs), but they also dramatically changed their style to sound more like that of Van Halen. This change is quite welcome; not only are the performances more unpredictable, but the lyrics and melodies are better written. In fact, some of the Scorpions' most classic songs, such as "Loving You Sunday Morning," "Holiday," and "Coast to Coast" are found on Lovedrive, which makes it one of their finest. ~ Barry Weber

Lovedrive Music Review
Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All 16 Reviews When Rockers Rocked Just listened to a live concert of the Scorpions recorded at a small club in Chicago area back when this LP was released. They had such energy. Even slow stuff from previous LP's rocked. Saw them at Chicago's Navy Pier the next night at ChicagoFest and they blew me away with the old as well as this LP. As for the person who thought it was a porno cover.... Get a life. I see worse on Network TV then this cover shows. It's an LP that works on many levels. Ballad "Always Somewhere", Full Metal Assault "Can't Get Enough & Another Piece of Meat" Combo Ballad/Assault "Loving You Sunday Morning" & Of Course The Major Assault "LoveDrive". It rocks with unbridled energy. Last time I saw them in 2004 they still rocked and blew recent fans away with "Burn The Sky". Get it, play it !!!! Lovedrive is breakthrough album for Scorps! This scorpions album released in 1979 is a definite classic. It contains the typical hard rock, heavy metal formula that lots of bands would later imitate. The album starts off with Loving You Sunday Morning, an uptempo melodic rock standout. Other memorable tracks include the ballad Always Somewhere as well as the instrumental hard driving Coast to Coast. The title track Lovedrive with it's kickin riffs really brings this album to a climax . Michael Shencker, the guitar virtuoso from UFO and MSG also makes his debut on this album though short lived! This is a must have album for hard rock fans who enjoy a time when bands played their hearts out for the fans! Bliz Submitted by a reviewer (Kearny, NJ USA!!!) Was This Review Helpful? The Ultimate Metal Mix Can you say "variety?" I thought you could. The genius of this album is it has something for everyone. Traditional metal cliche' like "Another Piece of Meat" (how much more metal can you get, right?), tasteful acoustic tracks such as "Always Somewhere" and "Holiday," and even a hard-rockin' reggae tune! I must disagree with the reviewer who said that "Is There Anybody There?" (the reggae-ish tune) is a weak point on this album. On the contrary, the fact that Scorpions can get away with this and make what seems improbable, into one of the best tracks they've ever written, stands as a tribute to their talent. Though by his own admission, Matthias Jabs was influenced by Michael Schenker, I also feel that his playing on this album is very tasty (check out the solos on "Loving You Sunday Morning" and "Is There Anybody There?"). This album recalls a time when bands chose the best tracks they had written to represent their then-current musical direction; i.e., there are no fillers and no fluff on this album. All 8 tracks are of the finest quality. Though the Scorpions have a few albums that show off superior musicianship, no Scorpions album contains better songwriting or production than "Lovedrive." Do yourself a favor and pick up this album. Quality through and through. Submitted by Red Shark (Ohio, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.
Quintessential Scorpions This album has always made me wonder how much better Scorpions might have been (than their already colossal greatness) had Michael Schenker stuck with the band. His presence on this album is key, with his rythmic influence evident even on songs he is not credited with writing/performing. If you don't believe me, get some UFO and MSG and just listen. The title track, Holiday, and Loving You Sunday Morning have become mainstays of Scorpions performances for years, and deservedly so. However, it is the "backside" tracks on this album that really make it shine. Another Piece of Meat is a relentless rocker with incredibly tight riffs and a steamrolling rhythm that simply works. Always Somewhere is a primal ballad ala the later Scorps hit Lady Starlight, but is actually more focused and melodic. Coast to Coast is an instrumental with an entrancing melody. Can't Get Enough is another very tight rocker that screams. And Is There Anybody There? is another haunting rhythmic track that blends so well with the softer side of this production. When all is said and done this is perhaps Scorpions' best album of all time. It is a perfect blend of smashing heavy metal offset with delicate and thoughtful ballads. Lovedrive is an artistic tour de force combined with a technical masterpiece. It is a must-have in any classic rock collection. Submitted by Paul (Seguin, TX, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Nearly Perfect The Scorpions never made a better album than this, song-by-song. No duds here. Cool, funny cover art from the legendary Hipgnosis. Klaus Meine is at his peak here, singing soulfully instead of merely hitting the notes. Lovedrive might just be the template for the polished L.A. metal of the 80s: precise duelling guitars, soaring lead and harmony vocals, and razor-sharp melodies.
