80's pop metal demigods Def Leppard release their 9th album amid a hard rock resurgence primed and ready for the Lep's sound. With their previous album, SLANG, heading slightly too far in the alternative direction for longtime fans to digest, EUPHORIA is a welcome return to form.
"Demolition Man" is a hard rock track reminiscent of HIGH N' DRY-era Def Lep. "Promises" is an infectious pop ditty featuring Mutt Lange on background vocals. Lange also supplies funky guitar on "All Night," yet the longtime Leppard producer takes a backseat to Pete Woodroffe and the band for this album's production. "Goodbye" is a wonderful power ballad from the band that invented the genre. On EUPHORIA, Def Leppard keep things fresh and new, while returning to the hooks and crunchy guitars that made the group a household name. The album is their strongest since 1992's ADRENALIZE, and well worth a listen.
Recorded at Joe's Garage (Studios 1 & 2), Dublin, Ireland.
Engineers: Pete Woodroffe, Ronan McHugh, Ger McDonnell.
Def Leppard: Phil Collen, Vivian Campbell (vocals, guitar); Rick "Sav" Savage (vocals, bass); Joe Elliot (vocals); Rick Allen (drums).
Additional personnel: Mutt Lange (guitar, background vocals); Damon Hill (guitar); Ciaran McGoldrick, Gary Sullivan, Ricky Warwick (handclaps, background vocals).
Entertainment Weekly (6/11/99, p.68) - "...Def Leppard are back in a big, bad HYSTERIA-sleek way....the hooks...call the lapsed faithful back to worship." - Rating: B+ Q (7/99, p.106) - 3 stars (out of 5) - "...a conciliatory exercise....there's a whif of cosy familiarity about the whole affair....those mocked by workmates for the length of their hair and cut of their jeans will be delighted..."
WELL... BETTER THAN THE PREVIOUS "SLANG". BUT NO WAY NEAR THE DL OF THE 80´. Submitted by "KNIFE" (PITEA, SWEDEN) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo 1 of 1 found this helpful.
What's happened? Who do these guys think they are now, Bryan Adams? Adams sucks now, too, by the way. Adrenalize in 1992 was pretty much their last decent effort at coming up with anything good. Def Leppard was one of those bands that had always been know in the 80's for being able to bring heavy metal into the top 40. They were among the elite, along with Van Halen, in being able to combine melodies along side heavy guitar. In fact, they were better than Van Halen, let's face it. But suddenly after "Adrenalize" they just stunk. Too much melody and soft ballads, and no more heavy guitar work. All gone, dead... I realize that "steamin" Steve Clarke passed away and was missed on Adrenalize already, but look who Def Leppard recruited recently! Vivian Campbell from Whitesnake and formerly of Ronnie James Dio. This guy can play heavy metal guitar. So what's happened? This is a big let-down. This cd has a few highlights but is mediocre at best. You'd be better off with the cd's: "High n' Dry", "Pyromania" and "Hysteria". Those are some of the best pop rock albums ever produced. This is just very weak. How many more of these nebulous albums will we see before bands like Def Leppard and Van Halen come up with some good stuff again??!! EUPHORIA FOR DIE HARD FANS OF THE BEST ROCK GROUP EVER! Def Leppard are definitely back on the right track with this album. Paper Sun and Guilty are stand out tracks and should be considered for the next single; these are the best songs delivered since the Hysteria album. On the power ballad side, Goodbye and To Be Alive are also great. The album still falls a little short of the greatness of Pyromania or Hysteria, but then again, which album doesn't? Great way to end the 1990's!!! In the last year of 1990's, they wanted to bring back their original sound with a blend of 90's pop and rock! That's what they gave us here! Thogu it's not their best, it is still an awesome C.D. You won't be disappointed! It shows you that even in their late 30's and early 40's, they can still play harder than ever! "Promises" and ""To Be Alive" are my two favorites! Submitted by eee (Broxingburg) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
Won't leave your CD player I bought this CD after I saw them live on this tour. I was surprized because it keeps the classic DL sound with a little modern touch to it. The CD lived in my car CD player for a long time. Submitted by JT (MI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
