Arrangers: Drain S.T.H.; Max Martin; Sank. Drain S.T.H. take a major step forward on Freaks of Nature, a more consistent record than their debut. The melodies of their grungy, detuned, slightly electronic-tinged metal songs still have a deliberate, sinister feel, but the band demonstrates a greater mastery of songcraft, rendering those melodies consistently memorable and outdoing most of their contemporaries in that department. As such, the occasional dull riff isn't quite so conspicuous, since the songs don't rely entirely on the guitars for their melodic hooks. The production, too, is generally quite good, if a little slick; the only glaring misstep is an awkward pseudo-rap bit in "Simon Says." Freaks of Nature is that rare bird in the mid- to late '90s: a heavy metal record that manages to meet the decade's new standard for heaviness while at the same time relying on high-caliber songwriting to put the music across, instead of gimmicky production or cartoonishly excessive aggression. Overall, it's refreshingly well done. ~ Steve Huey Appearances can be deceiving. These four young Swedish ladies may look like they've just stepped out of a fashion shoot, but they're bona fide heavy metal monsters. Like its predecessor, FREAKS OF NATURE delivers an unrelenting stream of ferocious hard rock. Crushingly heavy guitar riffs delve equally into '70s proto-metal and '90s grunge. Jackhammer drums pound out bone-crunching rhythms. The group's surprisingly adroit harmonies contrast the heaviness with just the right blend of stridency and sweetness. There's a touch more accessibility here than on the band's debut, but the hooks in no way mitigate the hard-rock glory of FREAKS OF NATURE.Rolling Stone (8/5/99, p.69) - 3 1/2 stars (out of 5) - "...super-heavy and way melodic....a giant leap over not just their debut but also most efforts from the supposed new metal renaissance....America, meet Metal Spice times four." CMJ (6/28/99, p.26) - "...The ladies hold their own in the world of modern rock, belting out Godzilla-sized riffs behind the feminine yet assertive vocals of Maria Sjoholm....a dark album blessed with hooks amidst the metallic chords and deep, churning rhythms..." | Freaks Of Nature Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Some rocking women!!! This CD fits in perfectly with my testosterone filled CDs perfectly, I am quite happy to have a woman band that fits in with my Rammstein, Static-X and Dope. With how these women rock I don't understand why there are not more women bands out there
But no matter the gender this band has writing and preforming talent

Nearly perfect! This is one of the best heavy metal records ever, and I say that with no hesitation.
The combination of scorching guitar, slithering bass, thundering drums and intelligent lyrics belted out by a lovely woman is pretty hard to beat.
"I Wish" one of those songs that I always end up cranking up to max and screaming to at the top of my lungs. "Black is Black" showcases the tricks the ladies learned from Iomni and mates. These two songs alone are worth the purchase.
If you love heavy metal done well and smartly, grab this now! Submitted by drenl;ok79 (Chapel Hill, NC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A Buy You Will Not Regret! I discovered Drain STH at Ozzfest a few years ago just before the break up of their band. A tragedy since Freak of Nature is by far my favorite CD EVER. For those tired of the same heavy metal this offers a slight feminine touch to their hard rock metal music. This is truly a "Do Not Miss" CD. One of a kind... I only hope their new band Superfix can live up to the awesome potential that Drain left behind. Submitted by a reviewer (Napa Valley, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Just what the doctor ordered I had seen snippets of reviews of these women, so I sampled some tracks one night. I immediately ordered the album. The women in the band are incredible, with amazing vocal harmonies that blend well with their songs. They are not in the least a "wimpy" band; they can kick ass with the best of the boys. Much luck to them, and go out and get the album. It's WELL worth it! Submitted by a reviewer (Kansas City, MO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
