Although many music fans were convinced that Def Leppard would become hard rock's next big band, few could have predicted the massive across-the-boards success that its third record, 1983's PYROMANIA, achieved. Many wondered why it was taking ... Full Descriptionthe group so long to release a follow-up to 1981's HIGH 'N' DRY, but the finished product was well worth the wait. Not only did it become one of the year's best-selling albums and made the band instant U.S. arena headliners, but it has remained a consistent seller ever since (by 1994, it had reached nine million units in the U.S. alone).
The songwriting and overall sound was more streamlined and succinct this time around--while there are guitar riffs galore, the songs have more of a pop feel. Founding guitarist Pete Willis left during the recording, replaced by Phil Collen, who fit in perfectly with the band. The album features such mega-hits as "Photograph," "Rock of Ages," and "Foolin'," as well as a couple of other tracks that could have easily been singles as well, "Rock Rock (Till You Drop)" and "Too Late for Love." PYROMANIA remains one of the best and most popular hard-rock recordings of the '80s.

Pyromania album
$12.05 Between the time of Def Leppard's 1980 debut, ON THROUGH THE NIGHT, and the band's second album, HIGH 'N' DRY (released one year later), the young group had improved tremendously. An extended world tour had made the band musically tighter, but they'd also become better songwriters--HIGH 'N' DRY contains several tracks that longtime Leppard fans point to as classics. Another major reason for the group's vast improvement was that renowned producer Mutt Lange was involved in the proceedings.
While the album wasn't a smash hit, it faired extremely well on the U.S. charts, due to touring and a newly born cable network called MTV, which aired Def Leppard's low-budget clips from HIGH 'N' DRY quite often. Highlights included the power ballad "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" (which would soon become a concert staple for the band), as well as the album-opening anthem "Let It Go," the instrumental "Switch 625," and the rough and rocking title track. HIGH 'N' DRY was reissued in the mid-'80s with a remix of "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" and a previously unreleased track from the album's recording sessions, "Me and My Wine." The late-'90s version deleted these two extra tracks, however.
Recorded at Battery Studios, London, England.

| | Def Leppard On Through The Night CD (1980)
Pyromania CD music
$5.89 After spending a few years honing their chops playing bars in England, the members of Def Leppard released their first full-length album, ON THROUGH THE NIGHT, in 1980. Though the young band (all the members were either in their early 20s or still teenagers) was an exciting live draw, on record, Def Leppard was still finding its sound. ON THROUGH THE NIGHT shows that the group had great promise, and that its chief influences (Judas Priest, AC/DC, and especially Led Zeppelin), are easily detectable. There's also a palpable excitement that comes across from a band recording its first album.
ON THROUGH THE NIGHT does not contain any hit singles that are still played on rock radio today (as the group's future releases PYROMANIA and HYSTERIA would), but it remains one of the band's most straightforward release. Although some of the material gets bogged down in cliches ("Rock Brigade," "Rocks Off," "Wasted," etc.), tracks such as "Hello America" and "Overture" contain soaring vocal harmonies and evidence the melodic rock direction that the band would soon take to the top. ON THROUGH THE NIGHT was produced by Judas Priest producer Tom Allom. On future releases, producer Mutt Lange, the "sixth Leppard," sculpted the band's sound.

| | Def Leppard Hysteria CD (1987)
Pyromania music CDs
$12.05 Four years after PYROMANIA, Def Leppard were a comparative write-off. Dismissed by critics, seemingly dogged by bad luck, with drummer Rick Allen losing an arm in a car accident, HYSTERIA had to be an album to turn heads. In retrospect, it sounded like the first true hard rock record for the CD generation. Ambitious arrangements and remixes on songs such as "Rocket" and "Armaggedon It," a crisp single in "Animal," and a dense paean to love with "Love Bites," all bets were off. Def Leppard had created an intriguing language of ideas that still speaks volumes more than a decade on.
Recorded at Wisseloord Studios, Hilversum, Holland; Windmill Lane Studio 2, Dublin, Ireland; Studio Des Dames, Paris, France.
